“Planting Seeds”
Dear Friends,
I planted a fall garden a few weeks ago; something I have never done before. First, I built raised garden beds and filled them with fertile soil. Then I planted seeds: radishes, arugula, bok choi, swiss chard, scallions, lettuce, and spinach. I watered the beds daily and waited, and waited, and waited. Gradually, the seeds began to sprout and grow. Now, we are starting to harvest the radishes, arugula, and bok choi.
In this week’s Torah portion, we learn about the seven days of creation. The Torah tells us that on the third day God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation: seed bearing plants, fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it…” The Torah commentary Aderet Eliyahu teaches that God placed the potential for growth in the earth. However, it is up to humanity to plant the seeds. Whether we are talking about agriculture or acts of social justice, Judaism understands that we are partners with God in realizing the full potential of creation.
As we begin a new year of study, plant the seeds that will bring healing and nourishment to our world.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

SOCIAL JUSTICE
Jews and White Privilege, Hosted by Reconstructing Judaism, October 26, 3:00-4:15pm -- A prominent feature of Jewish identity is that we are oppressed, that we are vulnerable to antisemitism. Since the end of the Second World War, however, European Jews in the United States have been viewed as white, and whiteness is accompanied by privileges, including privileges that come at the expense and through the oppression of people of color. What is the responsibility of white Jews to work against injustices from which we benefit? How can we shed our attachment to whiteness and acknowledge that the Jewish people is in fact multiracial? Rabbi Jacob Staub will discuss these and related questions with Rabbis Max Reynolds and Jessica Rosenberg, beginning with their essay
