THE RABBI’S CORNER

June 18-19, 2021 / 9 Tammuz 5781 / Shabbat Hukat
Torah Portion: Numbers 19:1 - 22:1 / Haftarah Portion: Judges 11:1 - 11:33

“A People of Fighters”

Dear Friends,

What is the Israelite legacy? In this week’s Torah, the Children of Israel made their way through the region east of the Dead Sea on their way towards the Promised Land.  Along the way, they were opposed by the armies of Arad, Edom, and Aram.  In each confrontation, the Israelites won the battle. Thus, began a series of encounters which taught the Israelites how to fight and how to win. This would serve them well when Joshua took them across the Jordan River to enter the Promised Land of Israel.

Too often we think of Judaism as simply a tradition of Tikun Olam – Be nice to others and they will be nice to you. But the world is much, much more complex and our Jewish tradition is multi-faceted.  While Tikun Olam is an essential teaching and aspiration of our moral and ethical tradition, we are also a people seeking freedom and independence. Sometimes, when absolutely necessary, we have to fight for it. Yes, we are a people of peace and compassion.  We are also a people of fighters.

Zay a Mentsch – Be a Good Person.
L’Shalom (In Peace),
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

MEMBERSHIP NEWS AND EVENTS

Participants Needed for Legacy Giving Task Force -- Shir Hadash is forming a Task Force to put together a legacy giving program to help ensure the financial well being of the synagogue for the long term future. There are many existing programs that can serve as a resource for creating our own.  The concept is for the Task Force to write and post on our website a "how to do it, why do it and how it can benefit the donor" piece.  Once that's done, the Task Force can likely disband. Interested in helping?  Contact Stuart Aizenberg at (847) 840-7895.

Tonight: Book Club, June 17, 7:30 p.m. --  On June 17, Book Club will meet via Zoom to discuss our next selection: The Liar by Ayelet Gundar-Goshen. This novel tells the story of an Israeli girl working in an ice cream shop, and reveals how one mistake can have a thousand consequences. Read more about the book here!

Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council Fundraiser, June 27 -- On June 27th, NW Suburban Interfaith Council will be hosting its 8th annual “iWalk” event.  Like last year, this year's event will be a virtual one due to COVID concerns. In 2020, thanks to donors and volunteers, the event raised over $10,000. Those contributions and 100% of the contributions raised from this year’s event will go to our communities’ four faith-based food pantries. Donations can be made via Facebook by clicking here or by sending a check to the NW Suburban Interfaith Council, PO Box 5301, Buffalo Grove IL 60089.
