CREATIVE WORSHIP AND RITUAL

Friday: Sukkot/Shabbat Multigenerational Hybrid Service, September 24, 7:00 p.m. - at Shir Hadash (outdoors) & Zoom:
Our beautiful Sukkah is ready to welcome you, thanks to the volunteers who helped build it!  Enjoy Sukkot & Shabbat in the Green Space with fun music, engaging prayer, and a delightful story. Then, celebrate in our Sukkah in the Green Space, and shake your lulav! We'll have sweet treats to eat in the Sukkah, including s'mores! The service will be moved into the sanctuary if rain is threatening.

Sunday: Family and Community Hybrid Simchat Torah Celebration, September 26, 7:00 p.m. at Shir Hadash (indoors) & Zoom --Let's celebrate Simchat Torah together! The Jewish festival of Simchat Torah celebrates our love for our Jewish tradition of learning and studying sacred scripture, the Torah.  This is a great family holiday celebration!  We will read the last few lines of the Torah and then the first few lines, thus finishing and beginning our study anew. And of course, we will dance, and have taffy apples (click here to reserve your apples)!  We'll be together, but distanced and masked, at the synagogue (and on Zoom). After the service, all are welcome to go outside to the Sukkah in our Green Space to continue the celebration. In-person participants must register in advance; space is limited.

Next Friday: Multigenerational Hybrid Shabbat Service, October 1, 7:00 p.m. - Watch for event details and registration coming to the website

New: Help Those Experiencing Domestic Violence: In-Person and At-Home Options -- Luggage for Freedom returns with in-person and at-home ways to help people experiencing domestic violence. Toiletries, gallon-size ziplock bags, new sheets, new towels, and new blankets can be donated at various dropoff locations. From home, you can make dignity bags and/or no-sew blankets. Items can be dropped off at the synagogue or in Northbrook, Deerfield, or Highland Park by October 21. Additional details can be found here. In person, come to the West Ridge Center in Highland Park to sort items and to pack suitcases and backpacks that will be delivered to domestic violence shelters. Shifts are on October 24, either 11:30-12:15 or 12:30-1:30. Volunteers to deliver the suitcases and backpacks to domestic violence shelters also are needed; loading cars will begin at 1:45. Watch The Matchmaker at your leisure beforehand (you can watch it for free on Hoopla with most library cards, as well as on some other streaming platforms) then tune in for a lively discussion of the film. The Matchmaker mixes comedy with drama as it tells a coming-of-age story unlike any you've ever seen before.

Book Club Meeting via Zoom, October 21, 7:30 p.m. --  For our October discussion, the Book Club is reading The Song of the Jade Lily by Kirsty Manning, a gripping historical novel that tells the little-known story of Jewish refugees who fled to Shanghai during WWII.

New: Soap Sack Introductory Meeting via Zoom, October 27, 7:30 p.m. -- Calling all Knitters and Crocheters! Come to an introductory meeting to learn about making soap sacks.  This is part of a global project uniting knitters and crocheters all over the world who make soap sacks and then donate them (with a bar of soap in each one) to homeless shelters, food pantries, veteran clinics, relief efforts and social service agencies.   For  more information and patterns please visit SoapSacks.com. Let's talk about how we can get Shir Hadash members and friends involved in this worthwhile project.  Please join a Zoom Introductory meeting on October 27th at 7:30 p.m. (Watch for Zoom link in upcoming newsletters.)
