Red Alert: Save Our Zoom Services --  It’s quite unfortunate that we continue to have a problem signing up people to be Zoom Hosts for services.  We always seem to be scrambling. Sometimes it’s even the day of the service.  Currently, we need hosts for November 5 (hybrid), three services in December, and for everything beyond that.

Many of these are Zoom-only services.  Most anyone who is familiar with Zoom can be the host from home. We can provide training and instructions.

Twice a month we have hybrid services (in person and on Zoom).  We have found a way to significantly simplify how that is done.  Anyone who has the technical know-how to host from home could come in and host from the synagogue. Again, we can provide training and instructions.

Sign up to host HERE.

We will have to consider how we can continue to offer services on Zoom if we continue to have to scramble to find hosts.  Contact Jerry Weiss or  Stuart Aizenberg if you have any questions.

Torah: Genesis 25:19 - 28:9
Haftarah: Malachi 1:1 - 2:7

“Raising Children”

Dear Friends,

Raising children can be hard.  Isaac and Rebecca knew this as their sons Jacob and Esau fought constantly, even before they were born.  Esau was a hunter and spent much of his time in the field.  Jacob was witty and scheming, cheating his brother out of his birthright and deceiving his father into giving him the blessing of the first born. Without a doubt, this family and other families in the Torah were remarkable dysfunctional. Oy!

Nevertheless, the Torah is sending us a hopeful message. By showing us a real depiction of a founding family of our people, we find that we can relate to them.  We can sympathize with their difficulties and be inspired by their successes. Furthermore, we can take their example and learn how to do better.  Our tradition is telling us to raise our children with strong guidance towards good behavior and compassionate understanding when things go bad. Afterall, we learn much from our mistakes, especially when we apologize and understand where we were wrong – pledging to do better in the future.

Yes, it is hard raising children, whether they are our own or nephews, nieces, grandchildren, students, etc.  Yet, it is one of the greatest of mitzvot – righteous obligations – that we can perform.

Zay a mentsch – Be a good person.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

It's not too late for you to help.  Thanks to those that already have.  If you have not, then please take a few minutes and consider doing so.  In case you missed it or would like to see it again, here's the excellent appeal that was done by Johannah Simon. If you'd like to donate, please click here or contact the office  (847- 498-8218).  Thank you.

Thank you for helping those in need.

Sunday:
A Little Craft Hunt, November 7, 10:15 a.m. --
The Family Activity Committee invites Pre-Kindergarten kids (infants, toddlers, etc) and their parents/grandparents, etc. to join us for a Story and a Hannukah Craft Hunt. We will be making kid-safe "menorahs" and other crafts suitable for decoration or as a gift for a loved one. Reconstructing Judaism Convention 2022: Discount Registrations Extended Through November 8 -- Next year's Reconstructing Judaism Convention is scheduled for March 23-27 in Washington D.C.  The last convention was held in 2018 in Philadelphia and was attended by Stuart Aizenberg, Scarlett Andes, Marc Fargotstein, Executive Director Nancy Kekst, and Rabbi Eitan Weiner Kaplow. It was enlightening, educational, eye-opening, and inspirational. We hope to get a larger contingent of Shir Hadash members to next year’s convention.  You can see information about it here.

Now Through November 19: Help Those in Need with Winter Warmth and Holiday Gift Donations --
The Social Action Committee encourages you to take part in two opportunities to help people in need: help them stay warm this winter, and ensure that children receive a present this holiday season. You can participate in both projects from home.

  • For information about JUF's Winter Warmth Drive, click here. Donations are welcomed at any time, but make a contribution by November 5 if you want someone to receive a Chanukah card that you donated in their honor or in someone's memory.
  • For JCFS's Holiday Gift Drive, click here. There are two options, to make a monetary donation or to receive a wish list and then purchase an e-gift card. The e-gift card will be given to the parents, who will then have the pleasure of buying presents for their child. E-gift cards must be received by November 19. Click here to make a monetary donation or to sign up to receive a child's wish list.

If you have any questions, email Lisa Burton Radzely.

You can sit back and relax while watching, or cook along! Click Here to register to receive the Zoom link and the full recipe. . Questions? Contact Melanie Andes.
