THE RABBI’S CORNER
November 26-27, 2021 / 23 Kislev 5782 / Shabbat Vayeshev Torah: Genesis 37:1-40:23 Haftarah: Amos 2:6 - 3:8 “Derech Eretz - Thoughtfulness” Dear Friends, Sometimes we act less than carefully. Sometimes we are unaware of the harm that our words can cause. In this week’s Torah portion, Joseph tells his family about his dreams of grandeur – how the sun, moon and stars will bow down to him – symbolically his parents and brothers. To his family, Joseph was pretentious and arrogant. This caused so much upset in the family that Joseph’s brothers eventually found a way to get rid of him. They sold Joseph into Egyptian slavery. Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan wrote that “Thoughtlessness can be as cruel as heartlessness.” Through this simple sentence we glean how hurtful careless and thoughtless actions and words can be to others. As we prepare to light the menorah and welcome the festival of Hanukkah, let us dedicate ourselves to the Jewish value of derech eretz - to act with sensitivity, awareness, and thoughtfulness.
Zay a mentsch – be a good person. Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow Click here to read The Rabbi's Corner on the Shir Hadash website.
