Friday: Shabbat Service (Zoom) Friday, January 21, 7:30 p.m. -- Join Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow on an exploration of the Biblical Era of Jewish history, roughly 600 BCE to 400 CE - from the Babylonian Exile to the Fall of Rome. We will sample the philosophy, literature, rituals, beliefs, and key events of the times.

Next Week: Shabbat Dinner Blessings (Zoom) Friday January 28, 6:15 p.m. -- Rabbi Eitan leads a 20-minute ceremony from his home as we light candles, bless our families, sanctify the wine, and bless the challah before Shabbat dinner.

“Who is Wise”
 
Dear Friends,
 
What is the essence of true wisdom?  Is it life experience, good judgement, or persistent preparation?  In this week’s Torah portion, Moses was having a tough go with leading the Children of Israel.  They had just left Egypt and already they were arguing and fighting amongst themselves.  Moses was the only one to judge and settle disputes. The task was overwhelming.

MEMBERSHIP NEWS & EVENTS


Sheleg, Sheleg! “Let It Snow” Fundraiser Now Through February 28 -- Donate to Shir Hadash and watch the P’teetay Sheleg “Snowflakes” fall throughout the synagogue. For every dollar you donate a snowflake will be hung in the synagogue.  Click here to donate .  FAC, Religious School and others will help create all shapes and sizes of snowflakes. Would you like to help from home? You can make your own snowflakes and drop them at the building. 


Share Your Ideas! Join the Membership Committee; Zoom Meeting February 2, 7:30 p.m. -- “To get new members, Shir Hadash should …”  If you’ve ever had such an idea, the Membership Committee would like to hear it!  Membership is an action committee.  It spearheaded the move to replace dues with a voluntary commitment, created The Haverim Society to honor members who increased their voluntary commitment by 10% over the previous year, helped grow our membership to 191 families, and more. We can implement your ideas too!

Krafts & Kibitzing via Zoom Wednesday, February 2, 7:30 p.m. -- Crafters of all ages and abilities are invited to share their current projects via Zoom. We will discuss ideas, learn tips and tricks, and shoot the breeze, with break-out rooms for younger attendees. Use the link to register on the website event page.


MOSH/WISH Game Night (Zoom) , Saturday February 5, 7:30 p.m. - MOSH (Men of Shir Hadash) and WISH (Women in Shir Hadash) invite you to a virtual game night! Abby and David Edler will lead a variety of fun games including quizzes, Jeopardy, and more. Use the link to register on the event page.
 


Mussar Study Group (Zoom)  Thursday, February 10, 7:30 p.m. -- Members are welcome to join our monthly discussion of the practice of Mussar, a centuries old Jewish body of teachings and practices that provide distinctively Jewish answers to life's questions. 


Volunteer at Feed My Starving Children , February 10 & 11 -- Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council invites you to participate in food packing sessions on February 10 and 11 at Feed My Starving Children, 742 E. Park Avenue in Libertyville.  Open to volunteers ages 5 and up; space is limited.


Book Club (Zoom)  Thursday, February 17, 7:30 p.m. -- Book Club's next selection is A Bintel Brief: Sixty Years of Letters from the Lower East Side to the Jewish Daily Forward. Join us for a lively discussion of this retrospective on the Jewish immigrant experience.  Registration will be open soon on the event page.



Sign Up for Reconstructing Judaism Convention  March 23-27 -- Rabbi Eitan and other Shir Hadash leaders will be attending the Reconstructing Judaism Convention in person March 23-27. You can join in, either in person or online! We will learn from and with experts, scholars and lay leaders as we will pray, sing, dance, and celebrate all that we can do in our communities to reconstruct Judaism.


Soap Sack Collection Continues -- Thanks to everyone who made such lovely soap sacks. Our latest batch was donated to the Chicago Lights Social Service Center, PADS homeless shelter, and the Lincoln Park Community Services Center. We will be wrapping up this project in January. Please keep creating and drop off any additional soap sacks in the drop box between the front doors of the synagogue. For any questions, reach out to Wendy Kopulsky at  oct13@ameritech.net  .

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL

 
Sunday School January 23 & 30 -- We plan to have in-person Religious School for upcoming Sundays. Looking forward to seeing our students at 9:45 a.m.!

ADULT EDUCATION

 "The Book of Job:  Lessons of Faith and Suffering" via Zoom Tuesdays, 1:00 p.m. -- In this joint project from Shir Hadash and St. Norbert/Our Lady of the Brook Parish, Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow and Deacon Peery Duderstadt look at the Book of Job from Jewish and Catholic perspectives.  Classes will meet on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. on Zoom, ending March 8.  Register to receive the Zoom link.

Lunch and Learn with the Rabbi (Zoom), Thursdays, 1:00 p.m. --
