Here we go! Our
first Shir Hadash Rummage Sale is this
weekend -- Sunday, August 24! Our storage areas are bursting with a huge variety of amazing items. Come by and see all the goodies that are on sale for a fraction of their value.
Our Rummage Sale can raise much needed funds for Shir Hadash, but only if we have your immediate help!
Our Rummage Sale can raise much needed funds for Shir Hadash, but only if we have your immediate help!
- Today (Thursday, August 21) our hardworking volunteers are sorting and setting up for the big event. Come by and lend a hand! We will be at the synagogue well into the evening hours and possibly on Friday as well.
- We also still need volunteers to help on Sunday, the day of the sale. Many hands make light work! Please click here right now to sign up for a time to help.
- Even if you can't volunteer, be sure to stop by and pick up some great bargains -- everything you spend helps Shir Hadash!
A Sweet New Year Begins with Shir Hadash's
Honey Sale

sweet start to your New Year by purchasing a bottle of honey (or two, three or
more) during Shir Hadash's Honey Sale.
The fundraising team is very happy to offer a giftable eight-ounce

$20. That's less money, honey!!
Honey will
be available for purchase at this Sunday’s Rummage Sale, before Shabbat services
on September 5th and 19th, and every Sunday morning beginning
September 7th once Sunday School is back in session, through Rosh
Hashanah. Be sure to pick some up for
yourself and to share with friends and family!

Creative Worship and Ritual
Shabbat Morning Bike Ride and Torah Study,
Saturday, August 23, 9:00am
Note
Location Change!
Celebrate a
summer Shabbat in the great outdoors! On Saturday morning, August 23, we will
meet at 9:00 at the Cook County Forest Preserves parking lot - on the northeast
corner of Willow Road and the Edens Expressway. We will greet the Shabbat
morning and ride five miles north on the paved North Branch Trail and stop for
breakfast and coffee at the Chicago Botanic Garden. There we will study some
Torah before returning to the parking lot by noon. Bring money for food and
drink. All children must be accompanied by a parent.
High Holidays Registration
High
Holidays are coming soon - Selichot, which starts the holiday season, is on
Saturday, September 20. So, it's time to
register! This year, we are doing that
on-line, using the ShulCloud system. E-mail
messages have been sent that contain all of the information that you need to
register, including a link to ShulCloud.
Different messages are being sent to different groups, depending on
whether you are already a Shir Hadash member, and whether you have attended our
High Holiday services before.
Members:
Please keep in mind, although you do not have pay for tickets to High Holidays
services, you do need to go through the online service registration. This
allows us to plan for seating, food, and other contingencies. Also, note that
members must up-to-date in their annual dues payments in order to be admitted
to services.
All
questions regarding services, registration, etc. should be directed to
cwr@shir-hadash.org. We look forward to see you all on the High Holidays!

“Dressing
the Part”
Dear
Friends,
New research
has revealed that only 6% of men wear neckties to work these days. Tie sales now are half of what they were in
1995 and tie manufacturers are ‘tied in knots’ about it.
I enjoy
wearing a tie. It has color and
pattern. It jumps off the shirt and
offers a unique style statement. Think about it. The tie is virtually the only thing a man
wears that shows some unique flair to his business wardrobe. Without the tie, men would all dress
essentially the same. Such is the world
of men’s fashion...
Well, this
week’s Torah portion mentions another men’s fashion accessory that seems to
have gone the way of the necktie - the tallit.
Now the Torah does not actually tell us to wear a tallit. Rather, it tells us to wear fringes -
‘tzitzit’ - on the corners of our garments.
The Torah explains that by seeing the fringes, we will be reminded to
follow our Jewish heritage of law, mitzvot, and righteousness (See Deuteronomy
15:37-41)....
