Shabbat Morning Service of Healing and
Comfort, Saturday, August 9, 9:45am
We just
observed Tisha B'Av, which is the day on which both Temples were destroyed in
ancient Jerusalem. As we make our way
toward the High Holidays, each Shabbat service contains readings of comfort,
which help elevate us from the sadness of Tisha B'Av toward the glory and power
of Rosh Hashanah. This Shabbat, in
particular, is known as Shabbat Nachamu - Shabbat of Comfort - because the
Haftarah reading, from the Book of Isaiah, starts with, "Comfort, oh
comfort my people, says your God."
To observe the Shabbat of Comfort, we will have a special Saturday
morning service on August 9, starting at 9:45am. We will say the Shabbat
morning prayers and have a Torah service, with additional readings on the theme
of comfort, including healing prayers for friends and family who are not
well. Please join us!
Shabbat Evening Service, Friday, August 15,
7:30 pm
Friday night
service, celebrating one year in our new building!
Shabbat Morning Bike Ride and Torah Study, Saturday,
August 23, 9:00am
Details to come -- hoping to avoid the rain this time!
High Holidays Registration
High Holidays
are coming soon - Selichot, which starts the holiday season, is on Saturday,
September 20. So, it's time to
register! This year, we are doing that
on-line, using the ShulCloud system. E-mail
messages have been sent that contain all of the information that you need to
register, including a link to ShulCloud.
Different messages are being sent to different groups, depending on
whether you are already a Shir Hadash member, and whether you have attended our
High Holiday services before. (For
example, attendance at High Holiday services is free for members, so there is
no payment information required from members, unless they are paying for guests
or books.) If you do not receive that
message, or if you think that you got the wrong message, then please let us
know. All questions should be directed
to cwr@shir-hadash.org . We look
forward to seeing you all on the High Holidays (if not before)!

Gala Kick-off Meeting, August 7 (Tonight)
Do you like
planning parties? Want to help create a
wonderful, memorable and festive evening to mark Rabbi Eitan's 20th year as the
spiritual leader of Shir Hadash? Then
join us at the Gala Planning Kick-off Meeting on Thursday, August 7 at 7:30pm
at the synagogue, where we'll review options and begin to set plans in
motion. With your help, we can make this
year's Gala the best yet! For more
information, contact Carrie Matt by email at carriematt0921@gmail.com or by
phone at 702-219-6584.
Rummage Sale – Donate and Volunteer!
The Shir
Hadash Rummage Sale is coming on August 24, and the donations have been coming
in like gangbusters! With the current
levels of donations, we think we can make over $2000 for our synagogue. (Don’t
stop donating, we can handle it!) To make that happen, we need all hands on
deck – at least one or two hours of volunteer participation per family.
Because of
this wonderful donation response, we are scheduling two extra sorting sessions
so that we are able to maximize our earnings! We need help on the following
dates:
- Sorting donations: Tuesday, August 12, from 7:00 to 9:00pm.
- Setting up: Thursday, August 21 and Friday, August 22
- Sales assistance: Sunday, August 24.
Please pick
a time to help out and sign up via the links on Shul Cloud. For more
information, contact Lise Schleicher at info@shir-hadash.org
Youth Committee Looking for Adult and Teen
Members; Meeting on August 19
The next
Youth Committee meeting is on August 19
at 6:15 p.m. in the Teen Lounge. The
Committee is looking for adults and teens to help plan and participate in
events during the year. Now that we have
a building, we have many more opportunities to present activities for our Youth
and we plan to have an exciting year. We
hope to plan some fun events like tikkun olam activities, kid movies, story
times, Mom/Dad and Me activities, and other programs planned by our Youth
Committee members. We are looking for
events that are fun and build community for kids of all ages. For more information, contact Carole Mostow
at youth@shir-hadash.org.

Nachamu (Shabbat of Consolation) –The Shabbat after Tish'a B'Av
Torah:
Deuteronomy 3:23 - 7:11 / Haftarah: Isaiah 40:1 - 40:26
“Seeking
Consolation”
Dear
Friends,
Comfort you,
comfort you My people (Isaiah 40:1)
Through
these famous words, the prophet Isaiah was reaching out to the people of Israel
2,700 years ago during a time of military threat and defeat by the Assyrian
armies from the north. Commentators have suggested that actually Isaiah foresaw
all the difficult times that would confront the Jewish people and sent his
message of consolation forward through time to all those who would experience
oppression, exile, and persecution.
Isaiah’s
words continue to comfort us even today. Following the observance of Tisha B’av
this past Monday eve and Tuesday, a day commemorating the destruction of the
great Temples of Jerusalem in antiquity, Shabbat Nachamu reminds us that a
bright future is right around the corner. Today, nowhere is that more true than
in Israel, which is experiencing an investment boom—even as war rages....
