High Holidays Highlights
Our High
Holidays services brought together our entire community along with a wonderful
turnout of friends, relatives and visitors who were welcomed as "High Holiday Members." Almost 700
people attended our main services, filling the sanctuary at OLB nearly to
capacity. As always, we were privileged to share in inspired readings, innovative
programs for children and teens, beautiful music, and the warmth of Shir Hadash
spirit. Many thanks to all the committee members, staff members, performers,
and volunteers who helped make the holidays unique and memorable. If you have
comments or suggestions about our services, please contact our Creative Worship
and Ritual Committee at cwr@shir-hadash.org.

This Week’s Services
Sukkot Family and Community Service with
Pot Luck Oneg – Friday, October 10, 7:00pm
Join us for
our annual Sukkot service. Our children
will begin the service with the congregation and then join a special children’s
art project led by our new children's service leader, Lauren Shook. The children will create decorations
celebrating the Sukkot themes of summer harvest and fall rains. Following the abbreviated shabbat service, we
will head outside to the sukkah to decorate and enjoy refreshments.
Did you know that there is a Jewish prayer for rain? Well our Shabbat Sukkot service will include that special prayer as well as readings and songs for the harvest festival. At this time of Jewish thanksgiving, we will honor and install our new Board members. We will decorate and dedicate our Shir Hadash sukkah booth and enjoy our oneg treats outside under the stars – unless our prayers are answered and it rains!
Shabbat Morning Service, Saturday, October 11, 9:30am
We will celebrate the Bat Mitzvah of Maddie Gutterman.

“Praying and
Working for a Rainy Year - Sukkot”
Dear
Friends,
Many of the
prayers and rituals that surround Sukkot focus on the prayer for abundant rain
during the coming winter months. According to one Talmudic teaching (Sukkot
37b), we shake the Four Species (Palm, Myrtle, Willows, and Etrog) in all
directions “to prevent harmful winds…and harmful dews.” Another tradition
suggests that we shake the Four Species to indicate that God is everywhere and
to pray that God will provide us with rain, abundance, and blessing in the
coming year. Now is also the time of
year when we make an adjustment in the recitation of the Amidah/Standing
prayer. Throughout the spring and
summer, we have been praying for dew.
With Sukkot and the start of fall and winter, we pray for rain – masheev
haru’ah u’moreed hagashem.
Numerous
Sukkot customs and prayers focus on the critical need for water in Israel and
around the world. Yet, in addition to offering prayers, an innovative Israeli
has created a system designed to conserve valuable water resources.
