Creative Worship and Ritual
This Week’s Services
This week we
have two engaging, participatory services to enjoy as we wrap up the holiday season:
Thursday morning, October 16, 10:00am
Our Shemini
Atzeret/Simchat Torah Service marks the end of Sukkot - the harvest festival of
the New Year. We will parade with the Torah scrolls and read from the last
verses of Deuteronomy and the opening lines of Genesis, “In the Beginning…” Our morning worship will include a Yizkor
memorial service as well. Everyone is welcome to attend.
The Jewish
festival of Simchat Torah celebrates our love for our Jewish tradition of
learning and studying sacred scripture, the Torah. This is a great family holiday
celebration. We welcome everyone,
younger and older, to dance numerous circle dances with our Torah scrolls led
by our singing rabbi and members of the Mighty Shir Hadash Klezmorim band. Our newest religious school students will be
honored through a ceremony called 'Consecration." Following the dancing, we will unroll a Torah
scroll from end to end for all to see. We will read the last few lines of the
Torah and then the first few lines, thus finishing and beginning our study
anew. Finally, taffy apples will be
served outside in our Sukkah harvest booth.
Volunteer Opportunities
Help Plan our February Gala
Our Annual
Shir Hadash Gala, scheduled for February 7, 2015 at Pinstripes, will be extra
special this year – we are honoring Rabbi Eitan on his 20th
anniversary as spiritual leader of our congregation! The planning process is
underway, and we would love to have your involvement in any of the committees
that interest you. Click here to learn more about the variety of options available. Your participation will
help make it a night to remember – for Rabbi Eitan, and everyone!
Our ongoing,
and vitally important, SHOP Shir Hadash fundraiser needs volunteers to staff our table at
Sunday School. It’s an easy job and a great chance to schmooze with other Shir
Hadashniks! Can you spare one Sunday morning to help – just one – from 9:00 to
12:30? Click here to sign up for a day of your choice on Shul Cloud, or contact
Gina Zinbarg, gzinbarg@sbcglobal.net, for more info.
PADS Homeless Shelter Food Donations
Needed, November 4
Once again
we have the opportunity to provide food for our homeless neighbors in
need. The local PADS shelter, located at
Kingswood United Methodist Church in Buffalo Grove, has assigned us the
following items:
- Main dish (to serve 12-15)
- Salad (to serve 12-15)
- Vegetable dish (to serve 12-15)
- Dessert
- Fresh fruit - 15 pieces (will be put in sack lunches)
- Two gallons of milk
- Two gallons of apple or orange juice
- Two pounds of sliced meat for sandwiches
- Two pounds of sliced cheese for sandwiches.
All food
should be dropped off by 6:00pm on November 4th. More specific guidelines will be shared with
those who sign up. Please contact Suzanne Wexler, volunteer@shir-hadash.org, to
let her know what you’re able to contribute. Thank you!
On Sunday,
November 9, we will be preparing, cooking and serving over 90 meals for needy
individuals at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church soup kitchen in Evanston. This event will require volunteers to be
available from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. We need
a minimum of 25 volunteers; that's about 10-12 families. There is no age limit
to volunteer, but from past experience, kids should be at least six years old
to fully participate.
Each family
will be responsible for bringing an entrée that will feed 15 to 20 individuals, one gallon of milk, one gallon or orange juice, one large bag frozen mixed vegetables, one large bag of fruit (oranges, bananas, etc.) and dessert.
If you are
interested in helping, please contact Mark Lenhart, mjlenhart@comcast.net,
before November 1. More information will be sent to all volunteers
approximately one week before the November 9th date. Thank you in advance for
your support!

Simchat
Torah
“One More
Holiday – Simchat Torah”
Dear
Friends,
What!? Another Jewish holiday!? How is this possible!? We just finished with Rosh Hashana, Yom
Kippur and Sukkot!?
That’s
right! We still have Shemini Atzeret
(which follows the last day of Sukkot) and Simchat Torah – Celebrating with our
Torah scrolls.
The Jewish
calendar is very special and is sending us a powerful message. Through our concentration of holidays, we are
taught to ‘begin life anew.” On Rosh
Hashana we rejoice in life itself and celebrate the creation of the world. On Yom Kippur we atone for our sins and begin
again with a clean slate. On Sukkot we
give thanks for the abundance of the natural world and begin a new agricultural
cycle. On Shemini Atzeret we give thanks
for the dew and celebrate the beginning of the rainy season. On Simchat Torah we give thanks for our
Jewish tradition of wisdom and learning and begin reading the Torah from the
beginning.
Our Jewish
tradition is telling us to grow more, learn more, pray more, and help others
more. It is telling us to make peace
with ourselves, renew our relationships with family and friends, strengthen our
connection with God, and speak out for justice.
Now is the time to begin that process anew. And what better way to celebrate the
conclusion of the High Holiday season and the start of a wonderful year, than
by coming to our Shir Hadash Simchat Torah service this Thursday morning and/or
Friday evening? We will dance with the
Torah scrolls, roll one out and read the end and beginning, and finally enjoy
delicious taffy apples and terrific oneg refreshments to celebrate a sweet and
prosperous New Year.
Chag
Same’ach everyone – I wish you a joyous Simchat Torah and a wonderful beginning
to a New Year!
