MEMBERSHIP AND UPCOMING EVENTS

Synagogue Open House, June 9, 7:00 pm
Tell a friend, bring a friend, and share Shir Hadash!  On June 9, we are holding an open house for all prospective members.   They will have the chance to meet Rabbi Eitan and Rabbi Seeg as well as hear from current members on why Shir Hadash is such an amazing community.  This event is open to families with Religious School age students as well as empty nesters. All we ask is that each of you take the time to think of one friend to invite to this event.  If you want to get their information to the synagogue, email our executive director, Geoff Prass, at executivedirector@shir-hadash.org.

Additional Recipes Needed for Cookbook! Last Call, July 1
Our first-ever Shir Hadash Cookbook is going to be filled with yummy recipes, but we still have room for more! Click here to see the types of recipes we're still seeking. To submit your favorites, please email cookbook@shir-hadash.org by July 1. Let's get cooking!

Looking for a Lost Ring
One of our members lost a ring in the building. If by chance you found it, please contact our executive director Geoff Prass (executivedirector@shir-hadash.org). It has great sentimental value to the owner and your help is greatly appreciated!

Book Club Recap
Last Monday, twelve members met at Mickey Herbin's home to discuss The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. We spoke about the Nazi invasion of France, the complacency of many of the French but also the resistance movement and the heroics of "ordinary" citizens. We learned about the Vichy State and everyday life in France during this period. We enjoyed staying longer this evening since we had such a lively interaction

Our next book will be The Hours Count, a novel by Jilllian Cantor. This work of historical fiction looks at the story of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg from the perspective of a neighbor who befriends them. The next book club meeting will be in early August, location TBA.

Gift Shop is Still Available!
Even though the school year is over, the Shir Hadash Gift Shop can still be contacted to fill your Judaica needs! We now carry beautiful tallit for your Bar or Bat Mitzvah, as well as Kosher scrolls for your mezuzah. CREATIVE WORSHIP AND RITUAL

Services This Week
  • Tot Shabbat Family Service, Friday, June 3, 5:30pm -- Join us for a uniquely interactive Shabbat experience designed for families with kids up to third grade. We'll start with grilled hot dogs for dinner at 5:30, followed by a fun service with Rabbi Eitan and Rabbi Seeg and a dessert oneg.
  • Shabbat Evening Service, Friday, June 3, 7:30pm -- Our evening service focuses on the roles and contributions -- sometimes unappreciated -- of Jewish women. How many have been overlooked despite their great contributions to society? A 2014 Moment Magazine article, Unrecognized Genius, highlights three women who accomplished so much but remained virtually unknown: Rosalind Franklin, Anna Schwartz, and Lucille Kallen. Read the article and join us for an engaging discussion about them and other heroic Jewish women! We also will have the pleasure of having our sixth grade Religious School students participate as leaders of our service.
  • Shabbat Morning Bat Mitzvah Service, Saturday, June 4, 9:30am -- We welcome Hannah Farkas to the Bima as Bat Mitzvah. All are welcome to participate in the service.

Shavuot, June 11, 7:30pm
Our next holiday, Shavuot, starts on Saturday night, June 11.  Shavuot is the holiday on which we celebrate the Jews receiving the Torah from God.  We celebrate in two ways: we participate in evening discussion sessions where we study Torah and other Jewish subjects, and we eat cheese and wheat – especially in the form of cheesecake!

On Saturday night, starting at 7:30, we are going to have a Shavuot service and study session. We have some outside speakers coming, to speak briefly and answer questions on pending Jewish issues. After that part, we will have an assortment of 20-minute study sessions on Jewish topics, led by Shir Hadash members.  We need people to lead those short study sessions.  You can even pick your own Jewish topic. If you’re interested, contact Fred at fandes@btlaw.com.

Even if you are not up to leading a session, we would love to have you there.  And bring some cheese and wheat - cheesecakes, but other cheese and/or wheat items are allowed if cheesecake is not your thing.  And for those who can't eat cheese or wheat, other oneg items are always welcome.  Come and be with us for a Shir Hadash Shavuot!

THE RABBI’S CORNER

June 3-4, 2016 / 27 Iyar 5776
Shabbat Bechukotai
Torah: Leviticus 26:3 - 27:34 / Haftarah: Jeremiah 16:19 - 17:14

“Peace in the Land”

Dear Friends,

This week’s Torah portion promises that if we follow God’s commandments, we will be showered with blessings. One of the rewards mentioned in Leviticus 26:6, is that there will be “peace in the Land.” The scholar Ibn Ezra understood this promise to mean that there would be peace amongst the Children of Israel, that is, peace amongst ourselves, the Jewish people.

These are difficult times. The pace of change is quick and people are becoming impatient.  Anxiety is rising and tempers are short.  Sometimes it feels as if the ties that bind us are loosening.

Yet, every two years, we get the remarkable reminder that all is well in the Jewish world.  Every two years, we get the remarkable opportunity to come together for a day of community, cooperation, and celebration. I refer to the “Greater Chicago Jewish Festival” which takes place this Sunday, June 5th in the Cook County Park District woods in Morton Grove. From 11am to 6pm four stages will pulse with non-stop music and performance and organizations will offer their information. Artists will display their work and food vendors will cook up Jewish favorites. The Jewish Festival is a day of great community solidarity and celebration. Shir Hadash will have its table represented and our beautifully fashioned pomegranate sculpture will be on exhibit with others like it. (Scroll down to Jewish Community News to see the event flyer.)

Come to the Jewish Festival and experience a taste of the peace and unity of which the Torah speaks in this week’s portion.  There will be “peace in the Land.”

Shabbat shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

TEEN NEWS

New Advisor Needed for Ra’am BBYO
Our Ra'am BBYO group is looking for a new female advisor (or two if you want to do this with a friend). BBYO advisors are volunteers committed to serving as role models, sharing observations, exploring challenges, and seeking solutions with the teens. You do not need to be a BBYO alum to be an advisor.

The BBYO chapter year runs from August to June and we would like to have someone on board over the summer for the transition period. If interested, please contact Carole at carolemostow@gmail.com, or Rabbi Seeg at learning@shir-hadash.org.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Summer Supper for the Homeless, July 18
Shir Hadash is partnering with Kingswood United Methodist Church, on Dundee Road in Buffalo Grove, to provide a Summer Supper for the homeless on July 18. As of now, we have enough volunteers to fill our dinner shift/serving slots -- but we still will need lots of food donations to make the cookout a success! Be on the lookout for an email with sign-up info. Questions? Please contact Suzanne Wexler, volunteer@shir-hadash.org.

Shiva Meals for Deborah Gutman's Family
If you are interested in doing a mitzvah for Deborah Gutman's family, their niece has set up an online sign-up for volunteers to bring meals for Randy and Danielle over the next few weeks. To sign up to provide a dinner, click here. If you have any questions, please contact Becca Quinones, quinones_rebecca@gmail.com.
