Save the Date! Annual BBQ, August 28
Mark your calendars for our annual Pot Luck Cookout on Sunday, August 28, at 4:00pm. It is a wonderful opportunity to visit with old friends and make ones. You can bring your relatives and friends too! This event is perfect for people who are thinking of joining Shir Hadash. Registration will be available soon so watch your emails, the newsletter, and the website for more information. Want to help plan the festivities? Contact Melanie Andes, fmandes@comcast.net.
CREATIVE WORSHIP AND RITUAL
We will continue our practice of periodically holding morning services on Shabbats that don't have a
bar or bat mitzvah. Going forward, we
will generally hold these services on the second Saturday of the month. All
ages are welcome to come enjoy the service - and the kiddush and light lunch
afterwards. (We particularly encourage families with 5th and 6th graders, who
have bar/bat mitzvahs coming up before long.
It's a great chance to experience what a Shabbat morning service at Shir
Hadash is like.)
Remember to bring your tallit. If
you are planning on coming, please RSVP by reply to fandes@btlaw.com so we can
do some food planning. And if you'd like a part in the service, or would like
to help with bringing, setting up or cleaning up the kiddush/lunch, please let
us know - it would be such a mitzvah!

Shabbat Korach
Torah: Numbers 16:1 - 18:32 / Haftarah: I Samuel 11:14 - 12:22
“Beacon of Morality and Conscience”
Dear Friends,
Elie Wiesel died this past Shabbat. A survivor of Auschwitz and
Buchenwald, he devoted his life to remembering those who perished at the
murderous hands of the Nazis. Though he
appeared to live as one who suffered an endless night of Holocaust remembrance
and accusation against those who committed the evil, Wiesel’s life was truly a
ray of light. His message became a
beacon of morality, conscience, compassion, tolerance, wisdom, and
understanding. ‘Forgive, but never forget,’ was only the beginning. Transform
the future was the true lesson of the Holocaust for Wiesel. Do real tikkun
olam, world repair, so that the Holocaust never ever happens again to anyone,
anytime, anywhere.
This week’s Torah portion tells of a self-centered power-seeking elder
during the long trek to the Promised Land.
Korah started a rebellion against Moses and Aaron amongst the former
slaves so that he could rally them and become their new leader. He was willing to fan the flames of discord
and opposition if it would give him some advantage. Of course, his rebellion failed
and Korach is never heard from again.
At stark contrast to Korach stands Elie Wiesel, a man who survived the
flames of extermination camps and war only to devote his life and being to the
pursuit of unity and understanding. May
we carry Wiesel’s work forward and bring kindness and compassion to world
sorely in need of peace.
Zichrono Livracha – May his memory always be for a
blessing.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow
