Firefighter Appreciation on September 11th
September 11th is the perfect time to show firefighters how much we appreciate them. On Sunday, September 11, at 12:30 we will make treats and cards for our community firefighters, as well as write notes to say thanks, and then we will deliver them to the fire station across the street. This is an activity for all ages, from the youngest children through adults. Firefighters appreciate hearing thanks from all!
Feel free to drop off cards and treats if you cannot join us on 9.11 at 12:30. There will be a box in the lobby starting September 7. Contact Lisa Burton Radzely at LisaSHSA@gmail.com if you have any questions.
Be prepared
for another wonderful evening of talent and treat! Coffee House Night – Open Mic Style is on the calendar for
Saturday, September 17. Doors open at 6:30pm, performances will be from about 7:00pm to 10:00pm.

Tzedaka/Charity.” Plus, we will be
having an Auf Ruf (pre-wedding celebration) for new members Connie Schlesak and

“Brotherly Love”
Dear Friends,
A popular legend about two brothers tells how a small
mountaintop in Jerusalem was selected as the location for the Temple. According
to the legend, two brothers lived and farmed grain on that mountain. One was
married with a large family, and the other was single. When harvest time
arrived, the brothers divided the grain into two equal piles. That night the
unmarried brother felt that he had more than he needed, whereas his brother and
his large family could surely use more. So, he secretly took some of his grain
and put it in his brother’s pile. The married brother considered himself so
fortunate to have so many children who would care for him in his old age. So,
he quietly brought grain from his pile to his single brother’s. Each morning
the piles remained unchanged. So the brothers repeated their secret act of
giving for several nights, until one night the brothers met. Recognizing what
they were doing, they embraced and wept. According to the legend, God selected
that site for the building of the Temple, a place of brotherly love.
This Shabbat, we will celebrate the beginning of the month
of Elul, the month that precedes the High Holidays. The great rabbis suggest that the letters
that spell the name of the month form a code representing a verse from the Song
of Songs – “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine.”
As we prepare for the High Holidays, let us focus on
repairing and fostering relationships amongst colleagues, friends, and
family. Like the brothers, let us be
there to help and support each other.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow
EDUCATION ANNOUNCEMENTS
Have you heard that Israel is called the “Startup Nation”? This year’s Havayah program, Chai-Tech, is all about getting involved in creativity, technology, and changing the world–up close and personal.
Chai-Tech provides an opportunity for students in grades 8-12 to participate in hands-on projects in technology, artistic production, and investment, while at the same time exposing them to some of the powerful and resonant teachings that have been the foundation of Jewish life and thought over the centuries. And along the way, they will get some great material to add to their high school resumes.
We are very excited to be able to offer this unique program to our Shir Hadash students; there is no program like it in the area. For details, visit our website or contact Rabbi Seeg at learning@shir-hadash.org.
School Registration Now Open
Madrichim are teaching assistants in grades 8-12 who work in the Religious School on Sunday morning. They develop creative, interesting, and engaging lessons for the students in both Hebrew and Jewish Studies, serving as examples of Jewish engagement to the students. Madrichim are role models; they are able to connect with students in a way that is different from teachers and can be extremely powerful.
Professional development is also part of the Madrichim Program. Every aspect of the Madrichim Program develops skills that are not only important unto themselves but also highly sought after by schools and employers. All this, plus you get paid!
The first day of Religious School is September 11 and space in the Madrichim Program is filling up, so please register here ASAP. (Families must complete member registration before teens can sign up for the Madrichim Program.) Contact Rabbi Seeg, learning@shir-hadash.org, with any questions.

Help Needed: High Holiday Food Packing and Delivery
Once again this year, Shir Hadash will be joining with Maot Chitim of Greater Chicagoland to help pack and deliver High Holiday food boxes for needy Jewish families all over the Chicago area. There are two different ways Shir Hadash members can help, either packing food boxes or delivering them. - Packing will take place on Sunday, September 18 from 9:30 to 10:15am at 8260 Austin Avenue in Morton Grove.
- Delivery of food packages will take place on Sunday, September 25, from 9:30 to 11:30am in the Buffalo Grove/Wheeling area. We will be delivering 105 food packages, which will be in large boxes weighing approximately 20 lbs. each. We deliver to several large complexes and use a rental truck to transport the boxes.
