Firefighter Appreciation on September 11th
September 11th is the perfect time to show firefighters how much we appreciate them. On Sunday, September 11, at 12:30 we will meet in the SH kitchen to make treats and cards for our community firefighters, as well as write notes to say thanks, and then we will deliver them to the fire station across the street. This is an activity for all ages, from the youngest children through adults. Firefighters appreciate hearing thanks from all!
Feel free to drop off cards and treats if you cannot join us on 9.11 at 12:30. There will be a box in the lobby starting September 7. Contact Lisa Burton Radzely at LisaSHSA@gmail.com if you have any questions.
The big night is just around the corner! Coffee House Night – Open Mic Style is on the calendar for Saturday, September 17. Doors open at 6:30pm, performances will run from about 7:00pm to 10:00pm.
- Talent and Bakers: Please click here or go to the Shir Hadash website and click on the Coffee House link so we know who you are and can plan properly. Or you can contact Margie at MargiePromoPro1@aol.com and put “Talent,” “Baker,” or “House” in the subject line.
New! Rabbi Eitan Featured in JUF Video about
Ta’am Yisrael – A Taste of Israel for Teens
How do you
help young Jewish teens discover what being Jewish means to them? Take them to
Israel. The JUF
public-affairs program Sanctuary joins
the journey as Ta'am Yisrael, a Community Foundation for Jewish Education program
for eighth-graders, does just that. The week-long trip offers teens a
wide-ranging taste of Israel's rich and diverse culture, while encouraging them
to explore their personal relationship to the land and their heritage.
In the
program, CFJE's Richard Moline and Ariel Rosen and Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow of
Shir Hadash discuss the program and its impact, as the teens offer glimpses of
their experiences on the 2016 trip. Cindy Sher hosts. You can view the program,
which was broadcast on ABC7 WLS-TV, on the Jewish United Fund
website. Sanctuary is a joint production of the Jewish United Fund of
Metropolitan Chicago and the Chicago Board of Rabbis, in cooperation with ABC7.
Shir Hadash Steps Out for Labor Day Parade
A huge shout-out to everyone who participated with Shir Hadash in the Buffalo Grove Labor Day Parade last Sunday! There were many interested prospective members along the way who would like to check us out for the High Holidays and more. Thank you to Cindy Grills for the coolest parade decorations ever!

CREATIVE WORSHIP AND RITUAL
Services this Week
- No Shabbat Evening Service on Friday, September 9 -- Enjoy celebrating Shabbat with your family.
- Shabbat Morning Bar Mitzvah Service, Saturday, September 10, 9:30am -- We will welcome Cody Gutterman to the bima as Bar Mitzvah during our service in the sanctuary.
- Shabbat Morning Minyan Service, Saturday, September 1, 10:00am -- As you know, we have been periodically holding small,
informal Shabbat morning services. Going forward, we will hold these services
on the second Saturday of the month at 10:00am, beginning this week. If there
is also a bar or bat mitzvah service on that Shabbat (as there is this week),
then our small "minyan" service will be held in the youth lounge and
will be lay-led (since the Rabbi will be leading the service in the sanctuary). You are welcome to come and enjoy this small Shabbat morning service - and the kiddush and light lunch afterwards. Remember to bring your tallit. Please RSVP by reply to fandes@btlaw.com, so we can do some food planning. And if you'd like a part in the service, or would like to help with the kiddush/lunch, please let us know.
High Holiday Registration Now Open
We have opened registration for members and guests for our High Holidays services, with all forms available on the Shir Hadash website. Please note that everyone should register, including members, so that we can plan appropriately to ensure a meaningful and comfortable experience for everyone. Prayer books, if needed, can also be ordered through the registration form.THE RABBI’S CORNER

“The Web of
Life”
Dear
Friends,
What is
perhaps most famous source in Jewish literature for the importance of
environmentalism? This week’s Torah
portion describes a military campaign to lay siege on a city. Moses commands
the people that when setting up a seige, “you shall not destroy the trees by
wielding an axe against them; you may eat of them, but you shall not cut them
down; for is the tree like a man of the field that you should besiege it?”
(Deuteronomy 20:19). From this verse we derive the prohibition of “bal
tashchit,” which prohibits unjustified waste.
As we enjoy
the closing days of summer and prepare for the High Holidays, consider how we
use precious resources around us every day.
Do we use only what we need? Do
we reuse when we can? Do we recycle whenever possible? In some ways we human beings are stewards of
the natural world and find ourselves responsible for protecting the earth and
its resources. In other ways, we humans
need to take a step back and appreciate the world, its ecosystems, and all
creatures as possessing unique places in the world and all nature, without any
relationship with or connection to people.
As we
approach the High Holy Days of introspection and reflection, let’s consider our
role in the vast web of life.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow
EDUCATION ANNOUNCEMENTS
Sunday! A New Year of Religous School Starts September 11
Havayah Goes "Chai Tech"!
Have you heard that Israel is called the “Startup Nation”? This year’s Havayah program, Chai-Tech, is all about getting involved in creativity, technology, and changing the world–up close and personal.
Chai-Tech provides an opportunity for students in grades 8-12 to participate in hands-on projects in technology, artistic production, and investment, while at the same time exposing them to some of the powerful and resonant teachings that have been the foundation of Jewish life and thought over the centuries. And along the way, they will get some great material to add to their high school resumes.
We are very excited to be able to offer this unique program to our Shir Hadash students; there is no program like it in the area. For details, visit our website or contact Rabbi Seeg at learning@shir-hadash.org.
Madrichim are teaching assistants in grades 8-12 who work in the Religious School on Sunday morning. They develop creative, interesting, and engaging lessons for the students in both Hebrew and Jewish Studies, serving as examples of Jewish engagement to the students. Every aspect of the Madrichim Program develops skills that are not only important unto themselves but also highly sought after by schools and employers. All this, plus you get paid!
The first day of Religious School is September 11 and space in the Madrichim Program is filling up, so please register here ASAP. (Families must complete member registration before teens can sign up for the Madrichim Program.) Contact Rabbi Seeg, learning@shir-hadash.org, with any questions.

Help Needed: High Holiday Food Packing and Delivery
Once again this year, Shir Hadash will be joining with Maot Chitim of Greater Chicagoland to help pack and deliver High Holiday food boxes for needy Jewish families all over the Chicago area. There are two different ways Shir Hadash members can help, either packing food boxes or delivering them. - Packing will take place on Sunday, September 18 from 9:30 to 10:15am at 8260 Austin Avenue in Morton Grove.
- Delivery of food packages will take place on Sunday, September 25, from 9:30 to 11:30am in the Buffalo Grove/Wheeling area. We will be delivering 105 food packages, which will be in large boxes weighing approximately 20 lbs. each. We deliver to several large complexes and use a rental truck to transport the boxes.
