Thanks to all who came to the Firefighter Appreciation event and to those who left donations in the collections box. The firefighters were in awe of the numerous desserts, cards, and thank-you letters. Multiple times, they said it meant a lot to them to be thought of and for people to do so much for them.
CREATIVE WORSHIP AND RITUAL
Services this Week
Believe it or not, the High Holidays are almost here - Erev
Rosh Hashanah is just 3 weeks away. We
are heavily involved in our planning process, so we really need to know who's
coming. If you have not yet registered
on Shul Cloud,
please do so. This is especially
important if you are planning to buy High Holiday Member or New High Holiday
Member tickets - you'll need to do that in order to be admitted to
services. We want you there, so please
register! All questions should be
directed to cwr@shir-hadash.org. .
- Shabbat Evening Service on Friday, September 16, 7:30pm (Shabbat Ki Tetze) --Did you know that there is no word for sin in Hebrew? So for what exactly are we repenting and seeking forgiveness on the High Holidays? Join us for a special Shabbat worship service and discussion, as we get ready for High Holidays. In preparation, please click here to read the Moment Magazine article from September-October 2014, “Do Jews Have a Different Idea of Sin from other People?”

“Seeing the World Through God’s Perspective”
Dear Friends,
How often do we jump at the opportunity to help when we see someone in
need? Sometimes, we do. Often, we do not. When we see a lost item, do we return it to
its owner? When we see someone
overloaded with packages, do we run to assist them? When we notice the homeless, do we offer
support, maybe some breakfast or lunch?
As Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson points out, we are tempted in those
situations to do nothing. It is human to
be indifferent. Yet Jewish tradition
tells us to act, to help, to assist.
This week’s Torah portion teaches that we are not permitted to be
indifferent. In situations where help is
required, we must see the world not through human eyes, but rather through
God’s perspective. In each and every
moment, we must be ready to make difference right here and right now.
As we approach the High Holidays, just two weeks away, consider the New
Year and how you will be ready to be ever ready to help those in need.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow
EDUCATION ANNOUNCEMENTS
New! School Advisory Committee (SAC) Meeting, September 25
The first School Advisory Committee (SAC) meeting of this school year
is Sunday, September 25, 10:30-12:30 in the kitchen. All school parents are encouraged to
come. We'll discuss what's happening in
the school now and down the road.
Contact the SAC Chair, Lisa Burton Radzely, with any questions at
shirhadashsac@gmail.com.
Havayah Goes "Chai Tech"!
Have you heard that Israel is called the “Startup Nation”? This year’s Havayah program, Chai-Tech, provides an opportunity for students in grades 8-12 to participate in hands-on projects in technology, artistic production, and investment, while at the same time exposing them to some of the powerful teachings that have been the foundation of Jewish life and thought over the centuries.
We are very excited to be able to offer this unique program to our Shir Hadash students; there is no program like it in the area. For details, visit our website or contact Rabbi Seeg at learning@shir-hadash.org.
Sunday Morning Torah and Philosophy Adult Ed Class, September 18
Our Sunday morning discussion group on Torah study and
modern Jewish philosophy is back! The class, led by
member Fred Andes, runs for about an hour beginning at 9:30am. We split the
hour discussion, usually, between review of that week's Torah portion (in
English) and discussion of modern Jewish philosophers, who have sought to help
us deal with the challenges of being Jewish in our time.
Class members will get an e-mail each week, providing a link
to the week's Torah portion and usually a link to an article about that week's
thinker. If you can't come every week,
you can still pop in anytime and participate in the discussion. No special expertise required. If you have questions, please contact Fred at
fandes@btlaw.com.

Help Needed: High Holiday Food Packing and Delivery
Once again this year, Shir Hadash will be joining with Maot Chitim of Greater Chicagoland to help pack and deliver High Holiday food boxes for needy Jewish families all over the Chicago area. There are two different ways Shir Hadash members can help, either packing food boxes or delivering them. - Packing will take place on Sunday, September 18 from 9:30 to 10:15am at 8260 Austin Avenue in Morton Grove.
- Delivery of food packages will take place on Sunday, September 25, from 9:30 to 11:30am in the Buffalo Grove/Wheeling area. We will be delivering 105 food packages, which will be in large boxes weighing approximately 20 lbs. each. We deliver to several large complexes and use a rental truck to transport the boxes.
