CREATIVE WORSHIP AND RITUAL
Family Shabbat, Friday February 2, 5:30pm
Families with young children are invited to
share in pizza dinner, followed at 6:00 with a very
special program to celebrate Tu B'Shvat, the New Year for the Trees, including
a fruit Seder! Rabbi Eitan will lead the program, which will include a
dance taught by Rebecca Rice. And, of course, afterward - snacks, and a Shabbat
activity. Please bring your favorite treats to share.
Shabbat Evening Service, Friday February 2,
7:30pm
Since the Torah portion this week involves the
Hebrews (in the wilderness) setting up a legal system and judges, after which
they receive the Ten Commandments, we're going to talk about a very relevant
topic to today: the rule of law in America. You may not know how directly
Judaism has influenced that system, and what Judaism says for us on this topic
today. As part of this program, some of our own lawyers among the Shir Hadash
membership will give their views (and no, it's not billable). Come and be
part of the discussion -- and please bring something to share at the oneg
afterwards.
Oneg Volunteers Needed for Services
Sign up to help as an oneg volunteer for one of
our upcoming services. It's easy: just click here to pick a date, bring a
challah, and show up.! You'll receive a reminder email the week before
with more details. For more information, contact Sean Fisher-Rohde at oneg@shir-hadash.org.
THE RABBI’S CORNER
February 2-3, 2018 / 18 Shevat 5778
Shabbat Yitro
Torah: Exodus 18:1 - 20:23
Haftarah: Isaiah 6:1 - 7:6; 9:5 - 9:6
“Standing at Sinai”
Dear Friends,
What really happened at Mount Sinai more than
3,000 years ago? Some say that the Ten Commandments were given. Some say that
the Torah, the Five Books of Moses, was revealed. Others say that that the
whole world of Jewish learning, including the whole Hebrew Bible and the
Talmud, were given to the People of Israel.
Of course, we will never know exactly what
happened. However, the experience of coming together at the foot of the
mountain was so powerful that the Children of Israel became more than a people
that day; they became a nation. Something very special happened. It had to be
more than a flashy and impressive audio-visual presentation. It had staying
power. It was transformative. The element that made the experience was the
introduction of Jewish text, learning, wisdom, law, heritage, and tradition.
That element was Torah, the center of Jewish life.
While it is easy to focus on the cultural
aspects of Jewish identity in our daily life, we must remember the importance
of Torah study and Jewish learning as the true glue that holds our people
together. On this Shabbat, commit yourself to studying Torah and reading Jewish
literature. Share the wisdom with family and friends. Like our ancestors so
long ago, receive the world of Torah and be transformed.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

Sunday Morning Bagel Bar Help

We all enjoy the delicious
bagels at Sunday school, graciously donated by Tammy Pomper. Now we need some
volunteers to pitch in with set-up and clean-up. Helpers would need to arrive
around 8:15am to make coffee and set out bagels. If we get lots of helpers, it won't be much of a time commitment
for anyone. Please contact Glenn Graff, nflsunday1966@gmail.com, or Tammy Pomper, tammy.g.pomper@gmail.com, to learn more.

all in between.

SOCIAL ACTION
Tonight! Educational Series on Domestic Abuse, February 1
The SH Social Action Committee announces a new
six-part series on the sensitive subject of domestic violence. Beginning
February 1 and running every other month, the series will welcome a variety of
experts to lead thoughtful explorations of crucial topics.
For the first session on February 1 at 7:00pm,
our guest presenter Margret Younis will address essential questions about
patterns of control in domestic violence situations. Margret has a Bachelor’s
Degree in Criminal Justice and a Master’s Degree in Forensic Psychology. She
helps women overcome mental, financial, and social barriers, and provides
counseling to help them pursue higher education, find jobs, and start
successful businesses.
Soup Kitchen, February 18
On
Sunday, February 18, Shir Hadash will be serving over 90 meals at the St.
Paul’s Lutheran Church interfaith soup kitchen in Evanston. We need six to
eight families (20-25 people total) who are able to prepare, cook and serve
food from 2:00 to 4:00pm.
Each
family will be responsible for bringing a precooked meat or pasta entrée
(non-vegetarian, in a disposable dish), a large bag of frozen mixed vegetables,
a bag of fresh fruit, and a dessert to feed approximately 15 people. Feel free
to partner with another family to fill these needs. This is a great family event
because there is no age limit to volunteer, but from past experience, kids
should be at least six years old to participate.
ISRAEL AWARENESS
Save the Date! Speaker at Shabbat Services, February 9

The surface and shores
of the Dead Sea are 1,388 feet below sea level, making it Earth’s lowest
elevation on land.
With 33.7% salinity, the
Dead Sea is one of the world’s saltiest bodies of water. The Dead Sea is
roughly 8.6 times saltier than the ocean.
Biblically, the Dead Sea

of products, from balms for Egyptian mummification to potash for fertilizers.
