Mac-n-Cheese Grogger Drive for Food Pantry, Through February 25
While celebrating Purim and making as much noise as possible when a certain name is mentioned, let's also combat hunger.  Running through the Purim Carnival on February 25, we will collect mac & cheese boxes that we can use as groggers (the traditional Purim noise maker) and then donate to the food pantry.  Place donations in the box in the lobby with the mac & cheese sign.

CREATIVE WORSHIP AND RITUAL

Shabbat Evening Service, Friday February 16, 7:30pm
We just had the holiday of Tu B'shvat - the New Year of the Trees, so this week’s service is the perfect opportunity to talk about the environment. There are basic principles of Judaism, drawn directly from the Torah and the Talmud, that teach us how important it is to preserve nature for future generations.  We will talk about these principles on Friday, and our discussion will set the stage for an exciting new program that is coming soon from our Social Action Committee that will enable us to take environmentally conscious actions together, as a Jewish community.
If you'd like to learn more about Jewish environmental ideas, you may want to check out the the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life. See you on Friday night - and don't forget to bring something for the oneg!

Oneg Volunteers Needed for Services
Sign up to help as an oneg volunteer for one of our upcoming services. It's easy: just click here to pick a date, bring a challah, and show up.! You'll receive a reminder email the week before with more details. For more information, contact Sean Fisher-Rohde at oneg@shir-hadash.org.

“Where God Dwells”
Dear Friends,
Where does God Dwell? In this week’s Torah portion, the Children of Israel have built the Mishkan (or Tabernacle), the portable tent shrine in the center of their camp. In the Mishkan the priests offered sacrifice and Moses encountered God’s presence. The sages asked if the Mishkan was really where God lived. After all, God’s presence can be found everywhere, in everything, at all times. According to the modern Torah commentator Pinchas Peli, “The Mikdash was not a dwelling place for God but a place set aside for people to come and experience more intensely the in-dwelling presence of God in the world at large.”

The philosopher Martin Buber told this tale: “Where is the dwelling place of God?” This was the question with which Rabbi Mendel of Kotsk surprised a number of learned people who happened to be visiting him. They laughed at him: “What a thing to ask! Is not the whole world full of God’s glory!” Then he answered his own question: “God dwells wherever we let God in.” (Tales of the Hasidim.)

What is your Mishkan? Where do you experience the in-dwelling presence of God in the world? Where do you let God in?

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

SCHOOL NEWS

No Religious School, February 18

Kallah Is Coming... February 16 - 18
Kallah is the annual Reconstructionist youth retreat for 6th-12th graders. It will take place over Presidents Day weekend at OSRUI (Olin Sang Ruby Union Institute) in Wisconsin. We will leave by bus on Friday, February 16 in the late afternoon (around 4:00 pm) and return on Sunday, February 18 in the early afternoon (around 1:00 pm). It is an amazing opportunity for our youth to come together with peers from the region to participate in a weekend of fun and community building.  All programs are created and led by the students. Please be in touch with Geoff if have any questions.  To register, click here.

Sunday Morning Bagel Bar Help Needed
We all enjoy the delicious bagels at Sunday school, graciously donated by Tammy Pomper. Now we need some volunteers to pitch in with set-up and clean-up. Helpers would need to arrive around 8:15am to make coffee and set out bagels. If we get lots of helpers, it won't be much of a time commitment for anyone. Please contact Glenn Graff, nflsunday1966@gmail.com, or Tammy Pomper, tammy.g.pomper@gmail.com, to learn more.

Lunch and Learn at Shir Hadash, February 15

SOCIAL ACTION

Soup Kitchen, February 18
On Sunday, February 18, Shir Hadash will be serving over 90 meals at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church interfaith soup kitchen in Evanston. We need six to eight families (20-25 people total) who are able to prepare, cook and serve food from 2:00 to 4:00pm.
Each family will be responsible for bringing a precooked meat or pasta entrée (non-vegetarian, in a disposable dish), a large bag of frozen mixed vegetables, a bag of fresh fruit, and a dessert to feed approximately 15 people. Feel free to partner with another family to fill these needs. This is a great family event because there is no age limit to volunteer, but from past experience, kids should be at least six years old to participate.
If you are interested in helping, please contact Mark Lenhart, mjlenhart@comcast.net.

ISRAEL AWARENESS
Guest Speaker at Shabbat Services Rescheduled for March 9
Due to last week’s snowstorm, we have rescheduled our presentation by Marlene Dodinval, the Executive Director for the Jewish National Fund in Chicago, for our Shabbat services on March 9. As we approach the 70th anniversary of Israel, Marlene will be talking about the Jewish National Fund’s involvement in the creation of the State of Israel and their ongoing work to build a prosperous and sustainable country for all its citizens

Did You Know? Fun Facts about Israel
Israel’s wine industry, revived after a gap of 2,000 years, was founded by the Baron Rothschild family. The company he founded, Carmel, is Israel’s largest winery, accounting for 40 percent of its wine market. When Baron Rothschild started the industry he had to import grapevines from India to do it because France was plagued by a pest (phylloxera) at the time.

Greek and Roman Emperors imported their wine from Israel.

Over 33 million bottles of wine produced each year in Israel; the vast majority of them are kosher.
