MEMBERSHIP NEWS AND EVENTS
Membership Renewal Time
It's time to renew your commitment/membership in Shir Hadash for the coming year. In an effort to streamline the process and reduce the use of paper, all our forms will, once again, be available on ShulCloud. (If you prefer to use paper forms for your registration, please contact our office at 847-498-8218.) Detailed information and instructions were sent out last week. Please complete your renewal by July 31. If you need assistance, contact Julie Wellisch at admin@shir-hadash.org, or our Executive Director Geoff Prass at geoff@shir-hadash.org.
Gift of Membership
Every renewing member will receive a Gift of Membership certificate in the mail, along with information on the program. Use the Gift to provide a free one-year membership to a friend or relative who has never been a regular or a High Holiday member of Shir Hadash previously. Your gift includes the recipient’s access to the High Holidays provided that their certificate is received at the office no later than Friday, August 17. Please note, the Gift eliminates dues for the full year. It does not include school tuition or fees.
Saturday Night! Hot Tub Havdalah, Saturday, July 7, 7:30pm

If it is too hot outside, we will retreat to the AC. We will provide s'mores and beverages; please bring a nosh to share. If you are partaking of the hot tub, please bring your suit and towel. This is a family-friendly event -- we would love to see you and your kids!
The Schleichers are on the NE corner of Dehne and Western, 2384 Dehne Ave. in Northbrook. “Equal Rights”
Dear Friends,
We often think that women’s rights and equality between the sexes is a contemporary thing. But, the Torah records an incident more than 3,000 years ago when women protested and demanded equal treatment. In this week’s Torah portion, five sisters came before Moses. Their father Tzelofehad had died and there were no sons to inherit – only five daughters. The daughters of Tzelofehad demanded the right to inherit their father’s property. Moses consulted with God and a judgment was rendered. The daughters could indeed inherit.
That story has been read every year in synagogues throughout the world for millennia. It took lots of patience for the next chapter of this story to be written. Finally, women are being ordained as rabbis and cantors. Women lead in every sector of the Jewish community.
We should be proud that our Reconstructionist movement played a pivotal role in these recent advancements in women’s participation in Jewish life in America. It was Judith Kaplan, daughter of Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan, founder of Reconstructionism, who celebrated the first bat mitzvah in 1922. It was the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College that admitted the first women for rabbinic study when it first opened its doors in 1968.
From Tzelofehad’s daughters to today, there is an unbroken chain of great Jewish women leading and guiding Jewish life from generation to generation.
Happy Independence Day!
Zay a mentsch – be a good person.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow

ISRAEL AWARENESS
Did You Know? Facts About Israel
- Israel is 60 percent desert and it's population has increased tenfold since 1948, yet it not only has enough water for itself, but in fact has a surplus and even exports water to its neighbors.
- In the 1930's British economists predicted that all of Mandatory Palestine — including today’s Gaza, Israel and the West Bank, had enough water to sustain 2 million people. Today, the area is home to more than 12 million people, a feat accomplished in large part because of Israel’s first-class water planning and management
- Israel provides large amounts of water from its own supplies to both the Palestinians and the Kingdom of Jordan and even exports billions of dollars each year of peppers, tomatoes, melons and other water-intensive produce.
- Israel exports $2.2 billion annually in water related technology and know-how. This amount will likely reach $10 billion in a few years.
- Israel has achieved this success with techniques such as drip irrigation, reuse of waste water, and desalinization.
