MEMBERSHIP NEWS AND EVENTS

Membership Renewal Time
It's time to renew your commitment/membership in Shir Hadash for the coming year. In an effort to streamline the process and reduce the use of paper, all our forms will, once again, be available on ShulCloud. (If you prefer to use paper forms for your registration, please contact our office at 847-498-8218.) Please complete your renewal by July 31. If you need assistance, contact Julie Wellisch at admin@shir-hadash.org, or our Executive Director Geoff Prass at geoff@shir-hadash.org.

Gift of Membership
Every renewing member will receive a Gift of Membership certificate in the mail, along with information on the program. Use the Gift to provide a free one-year membership to a friend or relative who has never been a regular or a High Holiday member of Shir Hadash previously. Your gift includes the recipient’s access to the High Holidays provided that their certificate is received at the office no later than Friday, August 31. Please note, the Gift eliminates dues for the full year. It does not include school tuition or fees.

This Saturday! Israeli Film Night, July 28
We have an exciting movie planned for the evening of July 28 at 7:30. We will be showing The Band's Visita highly praised Israeli film that inspired this year's Tony award-winning Best Musical. It's a fantastic film with an inspiring message. Admission is free and snacks will be available for purchase.

New! Mussar Study Group, Open to All! First Meeting August 2
Mussar is a centuries old Jewish body of teachings, a perspective, and a disciplined practice that provides distinctively Jewish answers to the sorts of questions any thinking person asks about life. Mussar provides guidance in identifying your uniquely personal path of spiritual growth and offers practices to help bring about that growth.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/vrVciK53shDf2gbL_sMLvUprlLtIyEwvonniUCB4RFCNRmFcXeprQCWbnuZNY-aRjrqKw4xHEybqqNwtU7k5fluZIDV_SqU8u-UcZY3Qw8Ka1lLNun2rXIppj_9nZ42Io-B5_p0w
Several members of Shir Hadash began to study Mussar this spring, and they have decided to continue meeting. All are welcome to join the group, which will meet on the first Thursday of each month at 7:30 pm. The core text we are studying is Everyday Holiness: The Jewish Spiritual Path of Mussar, by Alan Morinis, Founder and Dean of the Mussar Institute. The book is available on Amazon and through other booksellers. There is no charge for participation in the Mussar Study Group.
As background for the next session on August 2, please look over Parts One and Three of the book. We will be discussing in detail the character trait, or middah in Hebrew, of Patience. The schedule for the next several months is:
  • September 6: Order
  • October 4: Compassion
  • November 1: Gratitude
  • December 6: Equanimity
  • January 3: Honor
  • February 7: Faith
Please email Lynn Liebling lliebling@sbcglobal.net if you are interested in attending or if you have any questions.

We'll start at 6:00pm. Bring a friend, a neighbor, a co-worker, or a favorite cousin :) If interested in swimming, you are welcome to bring your swimsuit. On the chance of rain, we will relocate indoors.

Lahaka is Looking for Singers/Instrumentalists; Rehearsal July 30
If you were at our High Holiday Services (HHS) last year you experienced the wonderful sounds of our Lahaka (Shir Hadash's choir), led by our music director, Marek Rachelski. If you sing or play a musical instrument and want to learn more about Lahaka, come to a rehearsal and give us a try! While you need to be able to carry a tune and stay on part in up to four part harmony, many of our members cannot read music.  We provide all sheet music and can provide a learning CD.
The next rehearsal will be Monday, July 30 at 7:15pm. The full schedule is on the website calendar and the SH App. All are welcome! For more information, contact Ken at ken.wexler@lockton.com or 847-769-8247.

  • The film and musical are both about a group of Egyptian musicians who accidentally end up staying in an Israeli town.
  • Israeli actor Sasson Gabai will be heading to New York this summer to take up the lead role on state that he played in the 2007 film, Egyptian Colonel Tewfig Zakaria.
