CREATIVE WORSHIP AND RITUAL
Shabbat Evening Service, Friday July 20, 7:30pm
Rabbi Eitan just returned from serving on the faculty of the Reconstructionist “Camp Havaya” in Pennsylvania – and he learned lots of new songs and melodies for the prayers. So, come enjoy a relaxed atmosphere in which you can learn some of the newest tunes shaping the American Jewish music scene. Bring a delicious summer treat to share at our pot-luck oneg refreshments.
Tisha B’Av Commemoration, Saturday July 21, 7:30pm
From Sadness to Joy… Sisu et Yerushalayim – Rejoice O’ Jerusalem! Join us for an evening of story, song, reading, and reflection on the eve of Tisha B’Av, as we recall the many destructions, calamities, setbacks and misfortunes that have shaped so much of Jewish history. Each time misery befell us, our people’s resilience and tenacity revealed a passion to live and grow. Time and time again, our Jewish tradition has taught us to rise up from destruction to renewal, from sadness to joy. Tisha B’Av is a traditional fast day, so no oneg or refreshments following the service.
Next Week! Shabbat Morning Bike Ride with the Rabbi, July 28
Join Rabbi Eitan on a Shabbat morning 15-mile round-trip bike ride to the Chicago Botanic Garden. We will meet in the parking lot of the Blue Star Woods on Lake Street in Glenview (enter across from the Wilmette Golf Course - between Harms and Wagner Roads - just east of the bicycle/pedestrian bridge over Lake Street). Then we’ll ride the paved North Branch Trail to the Chicago Botanic Garden for coffee, tea, a nosh, and Shabbat Torah study. Visit the event page on the Shir Hadash calendar to learn more and sign up.

ISRAEL AWARENESS
Did You Know? Facts About Israel
- On Friday, May 14, 1948, Israel declared independence. On Sunday morning, the new state issued its first stamps which were labelled "Hebrew Post" since they were prepared before the naming of the new country.
- Every year, the Israel Postal Company receives thousands of letters from all over the world addressed to God. Rather than consider them dead letters, the letters are collected and once a year, they are taken to Jerusalem and placed between the stones of the Western Wall.
- There are Israeli stamps that commemorate historical events and key figures- all the major Zionist leaders and founders of the State have been so honored. There are stamps that mark Jewish holidays, the arts, sports, technology, biblical stories and characters, places in Israel, nature and more.
- U.S. president Harry Truman has his own Israeli stamp. A special Israeli stamp was issued for the US bicentennial in 1976. More recently a stamp was issued remembering the victims of Sept.11, 2001. These stamps underscore the special friendship and shared values between our two countries.
- Israel is written in Hebrew, English and Arabic on all Israeli stamps.
- The glue on Israeli postage stamps is kosher.
