Israeli Shinshin B’nai Mitzvah  -- This past Saturday we held joyous B’nai Mitzvah for six young ladies that were part of a group of 11 Shinshin that served in the Chicago area for the past year. A Shinshin is an 18-year-old Israeli emissary who defers their army service for one year to volunteer in Jewish communities abroad with the goal of educating people of all ages about Israel and Israeli culture.

“In the Image of God”
 
Dear Friends,
 
Why is the Torah so concerned with creating fairness between buyer and seller?  In this week’s Torah portion, a discussion about the buying and selling of property becomes a religious principle of ‘not wronging one another.’  In the story of creation, we are told that humanity was created b’tzelem Elohim - in the image of God.  Thus, if each one of us is created in the image of God, then to wrong one another is to blemish the image of God....

MEMBERSHIP NEWS & EVENTS


Shir Hadash Annual Meeting 
(Zoom), Sunday May 22, 10:15 a.m. -- Our Annual Meeting is this Sunday from 10:15 – 11:45 AM on Zoom. The meeting will be a webinar format like last year. The Zoom link & passcode will be emailed to our members on Sunday morning.  Additionally, shortly after the meeting begins, another email will be sent to you with the voting link. We will be voting on the budget for next year, open Board positions and bylaws changes. A quorum is needed in order to enact business. You will have a window to log in and vote, that will run from the start of the meeting until later in the day. Logging in and voting on May 22 is the preferred method as doing so enables us to count you toward the quorum required. Thank you for your participation.


Office Holiday Closures -- Please note that the synagogue office will be closed on May 30 for Memorial Day and June 6 for Shavu'ot.


Security Team Needs Volunteers -- Shir Hadash has a security action plan and equipment. We were talking about implementing training and did a bit before Covid hit. Now, it’s time to get back to implementing our plan. We need volunteers willing to help. Please contact President, Stuart Aizenberg if interested – 847-840-7895 / President@shir-hadash.org.


Buffalo Grove Pride Parade, Sunday June 5, 11:00 a.m. -- Shir Hadash will again be marching in the Parade as we did prior to Covid.  We may also have an information table in the park after the parade. Please contact Lynne Arons if you’d like to march and/or help out at our table: 847-732-7001 / lynnearons1@gmail.com .


MOSH/WISH Go to Pinstripes, Sunday June 12, 4:30 p.m. -- MOSH (Men of Shir Hadash) & WISH (Women in Shir Hadash) invite you to an adult event at Pinstripes in Northbrook!  We are meeting at the indoor Bocce ball courts for Bocce, food, drinks, and conversation. Food and drink, including Happy Hour, are available for purchase and Bocce ball is optional for an additional $7.00/pp payable at the Restaurant.


Greater Chicago Jewish Festival, Sunday June 12 -- The largest Jewish cultural event in Chicagoland features live music, artwork, Kosher food, and a wide variety of organizations and activities. Complete details at  https://jewishfestival.org/ .


Book Club Discusses Evergreen (Zoom)Thursday June 16, 7:30 p.m. -- The Shir Hadash Book Club is reading the novel Evergreen by Belva Plain. Join us for a lively virtual discussion; RSVP to be sent the Zoom link.
