THE RABBI'S CORNER

Shabbat Shalom from Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow
May 6-7, 2022 / 7 Iyar 5782 / 21 Omer
Shabbat Kedoshim
Torah: Leviticus 19:1 - 20:27 / Haftarah: Amos 9:7 - 9:15

“Pay Up on Time”

Dear Friends,

Why does the Torah demand of us “You shall not keep a worker’s wages with you overnight”?  This is part of the list of ethical teachings in the Holiness Code of Leviticus chapter 19. This commandment often confuses readers who wonder why the Bible is concerned with the payment of laborers.

The Holiness Code is concerned with how we behave with righteousness and live each day with honesty....

MEMBERSHIP NEWS & EVENTS

Save The Date!
Shir Hadash Annual Meeting
(Zoom), May 22, 10:15 a.m. -- This year’s Annual Meeting is being held on Sunday, May 22 from 10:15 – 11:45 a.m. Watch for an email with information on board candidates, the budget and by-laws updates. The Zoom link will be sent out the week prior to the meeting.

Mitzvah Committee: Meal Help Requested -- Long-time member Luba Rothblatt is continuing in hospice care at home. Thank you to everyone that has provided a meal for Luba, her companion Paul Alfassa and her caregiver. We have been providing meal help three nights a week since mid-April. The need still exists and they could use help in May. Please go to their MealTrain site to review and sign up to help if you can. Their preference is store bought or home cooked but there is an option to provide GrubHub gift cards if you’d like to help but don’t have time to shop for or cook a meal.

Social Justice: NOW Presentation, May 11, 7:00 p.m. -- Our member Iris Iglarsh is the Chair of the North/Northwest Suburban Chapter of the National Organization for Women. They will present Anushay Hossain, author of The Pain Gap: How Sexism and Racism in Healthcare Kill Women, in a Zoom presentation. Click here to register.

Mussar Study Group (Zoom), May 12, 7:30 p.m. -- New participants are welcome to join our monthly discussion of mussar practice. Contact Lynn Liebling or Kayla Shonberg for more information.

Shir Hadash Delivers Passover Food Boxes -- For the past 18 years, volunteers from Shir Hadash have helped deliver Passover and High Holidays food boxes in support of Moat Chitim of Chicago. On April 10th, Shir Hadash members, families and friends helped deliver over 100 Passover boxes of food to needy Jewish families and seniors in the Wheeling area. For many of the recipients, we may be the only person who visits them that day or even that week. They are always so thankful and appreciative of our efforts and most make sure to give the kids a little candy as a thank you for helping, the adults like the candy too!  This was only the second time we’ve been able to deliver these boxes since March of 2020, so it was great to see so many familiar Shir Hadash volunteers coming out to help.

Mark your calendar for September 18th, 2022, for our next box delivery and join us for this fun and rewarding volunteer experience. Contact Mark Lenhart for more info.

Step Up! Volunteers Needed -- Our voluntary commitment model asks each person to donate both financially and of themselves.  We are asking each member to commit to participating on a committee, task force, or project. We cannot afford to bring on professional staff to do all the work. A few of our greatest current needs include:
*Marketing and Communications - help is needed for our electronic sign, website, Facebook, etc.
*Social Action - needs a new chairperson
*B'nai Mitzvah Coordinator - to work with our families
*Task Force to honor Rabbi Eitan
If you want more information and have interest in helping in any of these areas, contact Stuart Aizenberg -  president@shir-hadash.org  / 847-840-7895

Memorial Wall Spaces Available -- We have plenty of room to remember your loved ones in perpetuity on our Memorial Wall. Each plaque ensures that the name of your loved one will be read on his or her yahrzeit, that the light will be lit at Yizkor four times a year, and that you will be mailed an annual notification prior to the appropriate date.
