Creative Worship and Ritual

Shabbat Evening Service, Friday August 1, 7:30pm
This Friday night come and enjoy a very special service, led by the members of our Adult Education class that meets on Sunday mornings to discuss Jewish Philosophy and Torah.  In addition to the regularly planned prayers, the class has picked out some important readings from the prayer book for us to listen to and think about.  The class will lead a discussion of this important topic: "What is Reconstructionism Anyway?"  So if you'd like to learn more, or you'd just like to be with the community for the evening (or both), come and join us.  And please bring something for the oneg!

Tisha B’Av Evening Service, Monday, August 4, 7:30pm
Tisha B'Av - the Ninth of the Hebrew month of Av - is the day on which both Temples were destroyed in ancient Jerusalem.  It is a solemn day, commemorated by many Jews through fasting.  Our Tisha B'Av service will be held on Monday, August 4 at 7:30 pm - at the synagogue. We will read a special ‘haggadah’ that recounts the destructions of the Temples in Jerusalem and other calamities that have come to the Jewish people on this day.  The room’s lights will be dimmed, and candles lit. We’ll read excerpts from the Book of Lamentations and join in a discussion on the themes of tragedy, destruction, and renewal.  Since it’s a fast day for many, no oneg - so no need to bring refreshments.  Please join us for this powerful, moving service.

More Upcoming Services
Mark your calendar for these upcoming services, and watch for details coming soon:
  • Saturday, August 9 (9:45 am) - Shabbat morning service of healing and comfort
  • Friday, August 15 (7:30 pm) - Friday night service, celebrating one year in our new building!
  • Saturday, August 23 (9:00 am) - Shabbat morning bike ride and Torah study
High Holidays Registration
High Holidays are coming soon - Selichot, which starts the holiday season, is on Saturday, September 20.  So, it's time to register!  This year, we are doing that on-line, using the ShulCloud system.  E-mail messages have been sent that contain all of the information that you need to register, including a link to ShulCloud.  Different messages are being sent to different groups, depending on whether you are already a Shir Hadash member, and whether you have attended our High Holiday services before.  (For example, attendance at High Holiday services is free for members, so there is no payment information required from members, unless they are paying for guests or books.)  If you do not receive that message, or if you think that you got the wrong message, then please let us know.  All questions should be directed to cwr@shir-hadash.org.   We look forward to seeing you all on the High Holidays (if not before)!

Volunteer Opportunities

Rummage Sale – Donate and Volunteer!
The Shir Hadash Rummage Sale is coming on August 24, and the donations have been coming in like gangbusters!  With the current levels of donations, we think we can make over $2000 for our synagogue. (Don’t stop donating, we can handle it!) To make that happen, we need all hands on deck – at least one or two hours of volunteer participation per family.

Because of this wonderful donation response, we are scheduling two extra sorting sessions so that we are able to maximize our earnings! We will now be sorting
  • TONIGHT, Thursday,  July 31, from 7:00 to 9:00pm
  • Tuesday, August 5, from 7:00 to 9:00pm
  • Tuesday, August 12, from 7:00 to 9:00pm.

We also need volunteers for
  • Setting up on Thursday, August 21 and Friday, August 22
  • Sales assistance on Sunday, August 24.

Please pick a time to help out and sign up via the links on Shul Cloud. For more information, contact Lise Lise Schleicher at info@shir-hadash.org

New! Youth Committee Looking for Adult and Teen Members; Meeting on August 16
The next Youth Committee meeting is on August 16 at 6:15 p.m. in the Teen Lounge.  The Committee is looking for adults and teens to help plan and participate in events during the year.  Now that we have a building, we have many more opportunities to present activities for our Youth and we plan to have an exciting year.  We hope to plan some fun events like tikkun olam activities, kid movies, story times, Mom/Dad and Me activities, and other programs planned by our Youth Committee members.  We are looking for events that are fun and build community for kids of all ages.  For more information, contact Carole Mostow at youth@shir-hadash.org.

“Squandered Assets”

Dear Friends,

This week, we begin the final book of the Torah – Deuteronomy – which offers a series of Moses’ farewell addresses to the Children of Israel.  Before Moses can begin his teaching, we learn the range of the Promised Land, which extends all the way to D’Zahav – Golden Place - in the south. According to the commentator Rashi, the reference to a Golden Place is how “[Moses] rebuked them for the Golden Calf that they made, due to the abundance of gold (zahav) they possessed.” Rather than using their gold for divine purposes, the nation of Israel sinned by squandering its wealth on a Golden Calf that brought them only misery, suffering and sin.

Moses reprimanded the Children of Israel for squandering precious gold on a worthless idol. As Israel uncovers the terror tunnels in Gaza, the world has learned how the Hamas leadership has squandered untold assets on destructive efforts aimed at attacking the Jewish State….
