Havdalah and Hot Tub Recap
A friendly
group of around 30 Shir Hadash members gathered last Saturday at the Schleicher
home for a lovely evening of singing, smores, a little wine, and sweets. But
the sweetest of it all was the wonderful company we shared for a few hours with
fellow Shir Hadash families. Be sure to visit our Facebook album to view photos from this fun annual event. Heartfelt thanks go out to Lise and
Sandi Schleicher for hosting, and to all who came out!

Shabbat Pinchas
Torah: Numbers 25:10 - 30:1 / Haftarah: I Kings 18:46 -
19:21
“Seeking
Peace”
Dear
Friends,
There are
many ways to respond to conflict. This
week’s Torah portion offers two paths as examples. At the start of the portion we learn that
Pinchas is honored for his violent killing of an Israelite man and a Midianite
princess as they were sharing intimate relations. According to the Torah, the
Midianites were accused of two crimes.
First, they terrorized, injured, and murdered Israelites on their
journey to the Promised Land. Second,
their women seduced young Israelite men in order to draw them away from and
thus, weaken the people of Israel.
Because of Pinchas’ actions, Midian was defeated and the men of Israel
remained true to their nation. Though
the Torah honors Pinchas for protecting Israel from further attack by its
enemies, we are still a bit uncomfortable each time we read the portion. Did it
really have to come to this? Was
violence needed? Was killing and bloodshed the only way to defend
ourselves? Later in the portion, we read
about the daughters of Zelophehad who petitioned Moses to change the law
allowing women to inherit from their fathers in the event that there were no
male heirs. Moses consulted with God and
the law was changed. They talked it over
and settled things without anger, rancor, or violence. There is a message here. While the Torah recognizes that sometimes the
only way to defend ourselves is through violence, we should not glorify or
celebrate this. Rather, it should make
us uncomfortable and reluctant. Talking
out our differences is the far better path, if at all possible.
Among the
news items this week, things are heating up with Ukraine and Russian
separatists, Iran and its nuclear program, Syria and civil war, Iraq and ISIS,
and of course Israel, Hamas, and the Gaza strip. War means terrible suffering
and pain for everyone on all sides. The murder of three Israeli youths and the
despicable revenge murder of an Arab youth are cruel, terrible, and
unjustifiable acts. Yet, I am heartened
by the way the families of the four youths are reaching out to each other to
offer support and comfort and how they are appealing to their peoples and the
world for calm, patience, and peace. May
their prayers be answered so that no one needs to suffer what the families of
Naftali Frenkel, Gilad Sha’ar, Eyal Yifrach, and Mohammed Abu Khdeir are facing….
