Creative Worship and Ritual

No Shabbat Service on July 25
Enjoy celebrating Shabbat with your family this Friday, and plan to join us for our next Shabbat evening service on August 5.

Volunteer Opportunities

Rummage Sale – Donate and Volunteer!
The Shir Hadash Rummage Sale is coming on August 24!  We need rummage to sell: time to clean out your closets! Things can be dropped at the shul Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am – 2pm, or on special drop off dates of July 20 and August 12.

We need volunteers for all aspects of the upcoming Rummage Sale:
  • Drop off/Sorting volunteers the evening of August 12, 7-9pm;
  • Set up volunteers on Thursday August 21 and Friday August 22;
  • and most critically, day of volunteers on August 24th.

We are asking for one to two volunteer hours per family, kids welcomed with parents!  We hope to raise more than $2500 but need helping hands to do that!  Click here to sign up or for more information.

Feeding the Homeless: Recap and Thanks
Many thanks to everyone who took part in our evening of Feeding the Homeless on Monday July 21st.  Congregants brought in all the food necessary to make this evening a success. We served the meal alongside members of Kingswood United Methodist Church.  It was great meeting new people and interacting with our neighbors in need.

Be on the lookout for more opportunities to serve the homeless through our commitment to the PADS program at Kingswood Church.

Fundraising Team Kick-Off Meeting, July 28
Please join us at the Fundraising Team's kick-off meeting on Monday, July 28th at 7:30 at the synagogue.  As our new fiscal year begins, the fundraising team is excited to explore the myriad possibilities for providing additional financial support in new, innovative ways as well as tried, true, and successful methods.  In the coming weeks, we’ll discuss ongoing efforts like our upcoming Rummage Sale, the annual Gala, the Rosh Hashanah honey sale, Dining for Dollars, Open Mic Nights, Movie Nights, Hanukkah candle sales, Barnes & Noble gift wrapping, iGive, and the very successful SHOP Shir Hadash. We’ll also look at some other fundraising ideas that are new for us, like Lox Box sales, Pesach candy sales, challah sales, a Hanukkah bazaar, a Mah Jongg tournament, and any other ideas we bring with us.

This isn’t a time to be shy! We need your ideas, your inspiration and your energy!  Join us this Monday evening as we make plans for this exciting new year. To RSVP for the meeting or for additional information, Carrie Matt at carriematt0921@gmail.com or 702-219-6584.

“Protecting All Human Life”

Dear Friends,
My daughter Elana came home from Israel this week for a brief visit.  She is a soldier in the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) serving in the Education Corps.  Not being a combat soldier, the army gave her some leave time.  Many of her friends are combat soldiers stationed on bases all over Israel.  Some of her friends are fighting in Gaza tonight.  We are all glued to the news, like all of Israel, hoping that the terrible fighting can end as soon as possible and that security, peace and dignity can be established for all involved – Israeli and Palestinian.

No country would ever put up with rocket fire upon its cities and towns, and for that reason, Israel is receiving great support from many countries for its right to self-defense.  However, Israel is also receiving terrible criticism for the civilian casualties, even though Hamas hides its rocket launchers, weapons caches, and command posts amongst homes, schools, hospitals, and mosques in order to drive up the civilian casualties.  Despite the criticism, Israel is doing its best to minimize civilian casualties, because that is the lesson of this week’s Torah portion.

This week’s portion commands the establishment of Cities of Refuge to protect anyone who has killed someone due to his own negligence, inattention, or accident.  They are to be protected from any act of vengeance that might be perpetrated by a “blood avenger.” The extensive network of six cities offered refuge where the accidental killer could find protection from a relative seeking vengeance for the accidental death.

Just as God instructed Moses to take extensive measures in order to protect the lives of those who have killed by accident, Israel has taken extraordinary measures to protect the lives of civilians in Gaza who are being brutally exploited by Hamas….
