Save the Date – Shir Hadash Annual Picnic, August 10
Mark your calendars for the Annual Shir Hadash Picnic and Sing-along, coming up on Sunday, August 10 at 4:00pm. Bring along games for kids and adults, food for the pot luck dinner, and your musical instruments and your voices!  Full details will follow soon. To help with planning, please contact Melanie Andes, fmandes@comcast.net.

Rummage Sale – Donations and Volunteers Needed!
The Shir Hadash Rummage Sale is coming on August 24!  We need rummage to sell: time to clean out your closets! Things can be dropped at the shul Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am – 2pm, or on special drop off dates of July 20 and August 12.

We need volunteers for all aspects of the upcoming Rummage Sale:
  • Drop off/Sorting volunteers on Sunday July 20th – two shifts, one from 10- 12, one from 12-2;
  • Drop off/Sorting volunteers the evening of August 12, 7-9pm;
  • Set up volunteers on Thursday August 21 and Friday August 22;
  • and most critically, day of volunteers on August 24th.

We are asking for 1-2 volunteer hours per family, kids welcomed with parents!  We hope to raise more than $2500 but need helping hands to do that!    Click here to sign up or for more information.

Book Club, August 6
The next Book Club meeting will be on Wednesday, August 6, beginning at 7:30pm, at the home of Susan Grossman, 2720 Oak Street in Highland Park.  The book this month is Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith by Jon Krakauer. This book chronicles a true-life murder which took place within the Mormon Fundamentalist community. It also discusses the history of America's fastest growing religion.  All are welcome. For more information, contact Meryl Abensohn, abenkras@aol.com.

Help Shir Hadash Earn Free Donations with iGive
You can help Shir Hadash every time you shop online – the iGive Button makes it simple! iGive is a free and easy way to support the shul.  Average shoppers using iGive raises between $30 and $100 a year for their causes. Shir Hadash has already earned nearly $200 this year from members using iGive. There are 1480 online retailers helping to make donations happen through iGive.

Plus, for each person who joins iGive in July for the first time, $5 will automatically be donated to Shir Hadash – no purchase necessary! All you or your friends need to do is try the iGive Button by October 15, 2014. And the person who gets the most new members to join iGive in July and try the Button through October 15 earns $1000 for his or her cause – no matter which cause or charity the new members they invited choose to support. $500 prizes go to the second and third place winners’ causes too. So after you sign up, please spread the word!

Click here to learn more and join iGive. If you have questions, contact Sandi Schleicher, finance@shir-hadash.org.

Scholarship Fund
We are grateful to everyone who has contributed to the Samuel I. Andes Scholarship Fund, a need-based fund for children whose families cannot afford to pay for their Jewish education at Shir Hadash. Melanie and Fred Andes have created this fund in memory of Fred’s great-uncle Samuel I. Andes and have graciously offered to match all donations to the fund up to $11,000.00.  Click here http://sh.shulcloud.com/samuel-i-andes-scholarship-fund.htmlto donate online or mail in your check made out to Shir Hadash with “Scholarship” written in the memo line. Thank you!

Don’t Forget Our Permanent Restaurant Fundraisers!
The Continental Restaurant in Buffalo Grove or Butterfield’s Restaurant in Northbrook will donate 5% of your total bill to Shir Hadash! No flyer needed – just mention Shir Hadash when you are paying or fill out the Shir Hadash book behind the desk.

Creative Worship and Ritual

Shabbat Evening Service, Friday July 18, 7:30pm
“Summer Camp-Style” Service
Enjoy a beautiful kabalat Shabbat, welcoming of the Sabbath day under the stars in our courtyard with beautiful music and special storytelling with Rabbi Eitan. Bring a special treat to share at our potluck oneg.

Recap: Shabbat Study and Bike Ride
A few Shir Hadashniks braved the elements last Saturday morning to join Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow on a bike ride through the Skokie Lagoons and to the Botanic Gardens. Though we were poured on, it didn't dampen our spirits. We had a lovely time catching up over breakfast, discussing the week's torah portion, especially as related to the current situation in Israel. We managed to dry out in the end and had a lovely morning.

Fundraising Efforts Need Your Ideas and Enthusiasm
As the synagogue’s new fiscal year begins, the fundraising team is excited to explore the myriad possibilities for providing additional financial support in new, innovative ways as well as tried, true, and successful methods.  In the coming weeks, we’ll discuss ongoing efforts like our upcoming Rummage Sale, the annual Gala, the Rosh Hashanah honey sale, Dining For Dollars, Open Mic Nights, Movie Nights, Hanukkah candle sales, Barnes & Noble gift wrapping, iGive, and the very successful SHOP Shir Hadash. We’ll also look at some other fundraising ideas that are new for us, like Lox Box sales, Pesach candy sales, challah sales, a Hanukkah bazaar, a Mah Jongg tournament, and any other ideas we bring with us.

This isn’t a time to be shy! Meetings are being scheduled soon to start plans for this exciting new year, including special meetings related to the Gala. If you are interested in working on our fundraising efforts, contact Fundraising Chair Carrie Matt at carriematt0921@gmail.com or 702-219-6584.

“Doing Our Part to Support Israel”

Dear Friends,
After the Children of Israel conquer the lush lands east of the Jordan River, the tribes of Reuben and Gad request the right to remain there instead of inheriting their allotted portion of the Promised Land. Moses replies with a timeless, eternal question: “Shall your brothers go to war while you sit here?” (Numbers 32:6). Essentially, Moses is making the argument that everyone must share the burden of protecting the nation. Members of one tribe cannot sit in comfort while their brothers fight for survival.

As our brothers and sisters in Israel contend with the threats of rockets, mortars, and now drones from Hamas in Gaza, what are we doing to support Israel’s right and ability to protect its citizens?  Like the tribes of Reuben and Gad, we too must do our part.

While Israel operates to prevent rockets from falling on its cities and restores calm and peace to its citizens, we must do our part to ensure that the Jewish state receives financial and political support. More than 100 rockets launched at heavily populated areas have been shot down by the Iron Dome missile defense system—saving countless innocent lives. This incredible technology is a direct result of the hard work of Israel’s supporters who helped to secure U.S. cooperation and funding for Israel’s vital missile defense programs….
