Rummage Sale – Drop Off Dates Announced
The Shir Hadash Rummage Sale is coming on August 24!  We need rummage to sell: time to clean out your closets! Things can be dropped at the shul Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am – 2pm, or on special drop off dates of July 10, July 20 and August 12.   We need help! We are asking for one or two hours from each family to pull this off – that will cut this huge job into tiny bites for everyone!  Kids are absolutely welcome to come along.  Visit our website for a sign-up form, as well as a list of what sort of stuff we need and details on the drop off dates. Questions can be sent to Lise Schleicher at info@shir-hadash.org.

Book Club, August 6
The next Book Club meeting will be on Wednesday, August 6, beginning at 7:30pm, at the home of Susan Grossman, 2720 Oak Street in Highland Park.  The book this month is Under the Banner of Heaven : A Story of Violent Faith by Jon Krakauer . This book chronicles a true-life murder which took place within the Mormon Fundamentalist community. It also discusses the history of America's fastest growing religion.

All are welcome. For more information, contact Meryl Abensohn, abenkras@aol.com.

Help Shir Hadash Earn Free Donations with iGive
You can help Shir Hadash every time you shop online – the iGive Button makes it simple! iGive is a free and easy way to support the shul.  Average shoppers using iGive raises between $30 and $100 a year for their causes. Shir Hadash has already earned nearly $200 this year from members using iGive. There are 1480 online retailers helping to make donations happen through iGive.

Plus, for each person who joins iGive in July for the first time, $5 will automatically be donated to Shir Hadash – no purchase necessary! All you or your friends need to do is try the iGive Button by October 15, 2014. And the person who gets the most new members to join iGive in July and try the Button through October 15 earns $1000 for his or her cause – no matter which cause or charity the new members they invited choose to support. $500 prizes go to the second and third place winners’ causes too. So after you sign up, please spread the word!

Scholarship Fund
We are grateful to everyone who has contributed to the Samuel I. Andes Scholarship Fund, a need-based fund for children whose families cannot afford to pay for their Jewish education at Shir Hadash. Melanie and Fred Andes have created this fund in memory of Fred’s great-uncle Samuel I. Andes and have graciously offered to match all donations to the fund up to $11,000.00.  Click here to donate online or mail in your check made out to Shir Hadash with “Scholarship” written in the memo line. Thank you!

Don’t Forget Our Permanent Restaurant Fundraisers!
The Continental Restaurant in Buffalo Grove or Butterfield’s Restaurant in Northbrook will donate 5% of your total bill to Shir Hadash! No flyer needed – just mention Shir Hadash when you are paying or fill out the Shir Hadash book behind the desk.

Creative Worship and Ritual

Havdalah and Hot Tub, July 5 at 7:30pm
Due to the July 4th holiday on Friday this week, we have no Shabbat service that night.  However, we do have a service and great event on Saturday!  Join the Shir Hadash community at 7:30 pm on Saturday, July 5, for a cozy havdalah service in the home and garden of members Sandi & Lise Schleicher, at 2384 Dehne Road in Northbrook.  The Schleichers open up their home each year to all members and guests for a short havdalah service followed by a campfire (marshmallow roasting!) and a soak in the jacuzzi for all. Please bring a dessert to share for our potluck oneg and don't forget your swimsuit and a towel.  See you on Saturday night!

Shabbat Study and Bike Ride, July 12
Enjoy summer with a special Shabbat Study and Bike Ride to the Botanic Garden on Saturday, July 12 from 9:00am to noon. Meet in the parking lot on the northeast corner of Willow and the Edens. We will study the Shabbat Torah portion and greet the Shabbat morning. Then we will ride five miles north into the Botanic Garden for some natural inspiration and breakfast or coffee. Then we will return on the trail to our cars. Bring a few dollars to purchase food and/or drinks. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Volunteer Opportunities

Help Feed the Homeless, July 21
Shir Hadash is pleased to announce a partnership with our local Interfaith Community to provide monthly suppers for the homeless at Kingswood United Methodist Church, 401 West Dundee Road in Buffalo Grove (just down the road from Shir Hadash).   Our assigned night is Monday, July 21st.  We will be serving alongside members of Kingswood Church. The doors will be open to our homeless guests from 6:30 to 8:30pm.

Our needs include cooks to prepare and drop off food, people to purchase and drop off other items needed for the evening, and dinner staff to set up, serve and clean up after the meal. All hot food needs to be dropped off at Kingswood Church, ready to eat, at 6:00pm.  Other foods may be dropped off earlier in the day or the day before.

  • Dinner staff -- We are looking for five people to serve as dinner staff from 5:30 to 9:00pm.  Onsite training will be held the first 15 minutes of the shift.
  • Food Donations -- We are responsible for the following:
    • Five Main Dishes - provide enough food to feed 15-20 adults; suggestions include lasagna, meatloaf, chicken, fish, pork chops, spaghetti and meatballs, brisket.  All food should be brought in hot, in disposable containers.
    • Five Vegetables - provide any type of vegetable dish to feed 15-20 adults. Food should be brought in hot, in disposable containers, ready to eat.
    • Five Salads - provide any type of salad to feed 15-20 adults; suggestions include:  green salad, fruit salad, cole slaw, taco salad.  Food should be brought in disposable containers, ready to eat.
    • Three Desserts - provide your favorite dessert to feed 15-20 adults. Suggestions include:  cookies, brownies, cakes, and pies.  (Cakes or pies can be cut by our volunteers.)
    • Also:  Three gallons of juice, two gallons of milk, two cases of bottled water, 25 granola bars, 25 mini bags of pretzels, 25 pieces of fruit
Please RSVP no later than June 30, indicating what you would like to sign up for.  It would be helpful for you to give us more than option, as we will fill the slots as responses come in. To volunteer, contact Suzanne Wexler at 847-478-1704 or skwexler@yahoo.com.

“Honoring the Memories”

Dear Friends,
Everyone should clean out the clutter every few years. That way we would be compelled to throw out, recycle or give away all the stuff we no longer need that has accumulated in drawers and closets and on shelves. More importantly, we will have the chance to find some really important things that we have lost or forgotten about over the years and tuck them away for safe keeping.

Dawn and I are doing just that this summer.  While we have only started, our plan is to go from room-to-room and pile-to-pile. What a big job, a tiring job - and a most worthwhile job. It forces us to look through every book, every file, every memo and every CD... and consider whether it stays or goes.  It gives us the chance to slim down, lighten up and keep only the essentials. A lot will go to recycling and give away.  Some will go to the trash.  A lot of it will stay to keep the memories alive.  That’s a very Jewish thing to do; preserve the memories and appreciate the important and meaningful lessons and events of the past….

Remembering Naftali Frenkel, Gilad Sha’ar, and Eyal Yifrach‏
This week,  the world learned of the murders of the three kidnapped Israeli teenagers: Naftali Frenkel, 16, Gilad Sha’ar, 16, and Eyal Yifrach, 19. Our prayers and thoughts go out to their families and to all who knew and loved them.

The Shir Hadash community and the Jewish people worldwide share this loss. From the day of their abduction Naftali, Gilad, and Eyal have been in our prayers, hoping for a safe return to their families. Unfortunately, despite our fervent hopes and prayers, we now know that these teens were abducted, killed, and left in shallow graves. They were young adults who loved Israel, studied Torah, and had everything to live for.

In tribute to their memory, we will read the names of Naftali Frenkel, Gilad Sha’ar, and Eyal Yifrach when we recite kaddish at our Shabbat services during the summer months.

At this time we grieve with the families and extend our sympathy and support to them. May the Eternal One comfort them amongst the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
