CREATIVE WORSHIP AND RITUAL
- Shabbat Evening Service -- Friday, June 17, 7:30pm: Given the terrible events that have taken place this week in Orlando, this Friday's service will include a discussion of a Jewish response to this tragedy. We will explore how the Jewish world can process this event and move forward, with renewed affirmation for life. We know that many people are troubled by what has taken place, and we hope that this service will help to provide healing and comfort. As always, we would appreciate your bringing something for the oneg. We look forward to seeing you on Friday night.
- Shabbat Morning Bat Mitzvah Service -- Saturday June 18, 9:30am: We will welcome Julia Fargotstein to the bima as Bat Mitzvah. All are invited to participate in the service.

“Reconstructionist Movement
Statement on Orlando Shooting”
Dear Friends,
In light of the horrific
massacre in Orlando this week, I share with you the message put out by the
leadership of the Reconstructionist Movement.
We mourn the tragic deaths of 49 members of the LGBT community in
Orlando, pray for the healing of the wounded, and extend comfort to family
members, friends and their extended community.
We condemn all acts of terror and all statements and actions designed to
terrorize, and we are especially horrified at an act of hate directed at
particular segments of the American population.
The mass shooting took place while Jews around the world were observing
the holiday of Shavuot, where we celebrate receiving the Torah. Deuteronomy 30:19 teaches, "I have set
before you today life and death, the blessing and the curse...Choose life, so
that you and your children may live."
We live in a period of increasing extremism. We must continually choose
life over and over. A rejection of hate and an embrace of diversity and
difference is at the heart of every vibrant community. Inclusive stances nurture creativity and interconnection
and create a safer world for all of us.
We urge Congress and the US President to take up common-sense and
measured gun legislation. While
recognizing the right of Americans to own arms for the purposes of personal
security and licensed sportsmanship, it has become clear that assault weapons
like the one used in this and several other mass shootings serve no purpose
other than to kill or injure at as many people as possible. A ban on assault weapons is a common-sense
measure that will prevent further attacks and help us overcome the terror of
this day.
Let us choose to foster light and love, connection and community,
justice and peace. Let us nurture
blessings and in this way choose life, for us and for our descendants.

EDUCATION ANNOUNCEMENTS
Get Ready for a Great New School Year!
The Shir Hadash Religious School is reigniting our tradition
of being a creative laboratory of progressive Jewish education. Based on input from members and the School
Advisory Council, our Director of Lifelong Learning Rabbi Seeg has put together
a curriculum for the upcoming year that will provide an interesting, innovative, and fun Jewish education for our students. Want to learn more about
the Religious School programs, or are ready to register? Contact Rabbi Seeg, at 847-498-8218 or learning@shir-hadash.org.
Lunch & Learn with Rabbi Eitan, Thursdays
Pack a lunch and join Rabbi Eitan on Thursdays from 1:00 to 2:00pm for an engaging discussion of the Book of Job.
TEEN NEWS
Updates from Ra'am BBYO
Bon voyage, MacKenzie! At the Ra'am final event of the year we bid
adieu to senior, MacKenzie. During MacKenzie's life ceremony, she shared fond
memories of her years in Ra'am and presented each member with a special gift
and note to encourage them to participate in BBYO to their fullest. MacKenzie
will attend University of Vermont in the fall. We wish her an amazing adventure
in college. Come back & visit us
soon!
During our final program, the chapter elected its fall 2016 term
board. Serving as N'siyah (president) is
Shauna with Michelle and Hannah as board members. The teens decided to allow
the remaining Ra'am members the opportunity to be program chairs rather than
have them commit to a full term board position. That way, everyone can learn
leadership skills and share in the direction the chapter takes. The group is
also going to officially become a BBG chapter in the fall - with programming
geared toward girls' events. It should be a fun and exciting term. Watch for news of the chapter and regional
kick-off events later this summer. There may even be a boys AZA chapter in the
works...stay tuned!
Welcome, Scarlett! Scarlett
Andes will lead the Ra'am BBG group beginning with the fall term, taking over
for Carole Mostow who is stepping down from the role. Scarlett met with the
chapter during our final event and began bonding right away! Kol Hakavod, Scarlett and welcome aboard!
Finally, thank you to Shir Hadash for all the support and encouragement
you have provided this year. We truly appreciate our home base! Ra'am is lucky to have such great
cheerleaders in our community and we want to say, "you're amazing!"
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
Summer Supper for the Homeless, July 18
Once a month from May through September, members of different faith communities participate in a wonderful mitzvah -- feeding the homeless at Kingwood Church, 401 West Dundee Road in Buffalo Grove. Shir Hadash's assigned date is Monday, July 18, and we're hosting a BBQ. All the dinner shift serving slots have been filled with volunteers -- thank you! -- but we still need many more people to bring in food. Click here to see a spreadsheet of donations we need. For details on where and when to drop off food, contact Suzanne Wexler at volunteer@shir-hadash.org.
