CREATIVE WORSHIP AND RITUAL

Services This Week
Shabbat Evening Service: Second Friday Speaker Series  “First Person, Singular – Eye Witness to World Events Through a Jewish Lens” – Speakers offer personal reflections on what it was like to live through major national or world events. This month we welcome Lillian Zoloto, our synagogue administrator for 14 years, who will share her story of how she survived the Holocaust as a hidden child in Belgium.  She recently co-authored the book Out of Chaos: Hidden Children Remember the Holocaust, published by Northwestern University Press.  Lillian has shared her story with our seventh graders over the years during their Holocaust study units and has spoken at numerous schools and events about her experience.  Come hear her riveting and inspiring account of rescue, survival, and renewal.

Shabbat Morning Bat Mitzvah Service --  Saturday June 11, 9:30am: We will welcome Sadie Sheridan to the bima as Bat Mitzvah. All are invited to participate in the service.

Shavuot, Saturday, June 11, 7:30pm -- Speakers and Cheesecake!
This Saturday evening, starting at 7:30, we will celebrate the holiday of Shavuot, by doing a traditional Jewish thing in a very Shir Hadash fashion.  Since Shavuot celebrates the giving of the Torah, the tradition is to study the Torah – all night.  This year we will hold an evening study session, devoted to learning and discussion about a variety of Jewish topics – with some great teachers from outside and inside Shir Hadash.

We are very excited to announce that we have the following speakers coming to talk with us:
  • Fern Finkel, from the group Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom, which “builds strong relationships between Muslim and Jewish women based on developing trust and respect and ending anti-Muslim and anti-Jewish sentiment.”
  • Rich Goldwasser, from the group J Street, which fouses on promoting a two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians
  • Yonatan Sacker, from the Jewish Agency for Israel, a group with a legacy stretching back 80 years that today seeks to connect Israel, Israelis, and the Jewish people worldwide.
  • David Liebling, telling us about Shabbatai Zevi, the famous false messiah
  • Fred Andes, explaining Reconstructionist Judaism (so you can explain it to your friends who ask)
  • Rabbi Eitan, teaching us about (and showing us slides of) the history and archaeology of Israel

We’ll have coffee, tea, and some special dairy/wheat surprises – as we usually do at Shir Hadash, please bring snacks/desserts. To honor the tradition of having dairy and wheat on Shavuot (which we’ll explain that night), we encourage you to bring in your favorite cheesecake. Of course, feel free to bring other treats for those who can’t eat wheat or cheese.  Come, learn, discuss, eat, and enjoy Shavuot!

THE RABBI’S CORNER

June 10-11, 2016 / 5 Sivan 5776
Shabbat Bamidbar
Torah: Numbers 1:1 - 4:20 / Haftarah: Hosea 2:1 - 2:22

“What’s in a Name”

Dear Friends,

As the book of Numbers opens, the leaders of each tribe who will assist Moses and Aaron in taking a census of the people are mentioned.  A fascinating element is that we have their actual names.  Through these names we can encounter the real individuals, our ancestors, who led the People of Israel 3,300 years ago.  According to biblical scholars, they are authentic as their form is similar to names from Babylonia and are unique to this early Biblical period.  They may sound strange to us, yet they are very meaningful.

Like in Native American culture, these names have such deep meaning and significance, describing attributes of each person, who they are and what they believe. Listen to some of the names and their meanings…
  • Elitzur ben Shde’ur – My God is a Rock ben (son of) The Almighty is My Light
  • Shlumi’el ben Tzurishaddai – At Peace with God ben The Almighty is My Rock
  • Nachshon ben Amminadav – Serpent ben My Nation is Noble
  • Elishamma ben Ammihud – My God Hears ben My nation is Glorious
  • Gamlie’el ben Pedah’tzur – God is my Reward ben The Rock Redeems
  • Eliasaf ben De’uel – God Will Increase ben Knowledge of God

A key piece of our contemporary Jewish identity is having a Jewish name.  It is a combination of our personal name(s) and those of our parents.  Like our leaders in ancient times, I encourage you to know your Jewish name and understand its meaning (look it up on Google).   Know about those for whom you are named and what attributes they possessed that may have been passed on to you.  Consider how the meaning of your Jewish name reflects elements of your personality, skills and interests and how it represents the person you are.  Use your Jewish name in synagogue, in your community and your interactions throughout the Jewish world.  Be proud of your Jewish name and do great things to help the Jewish people and all who dwell on earth.

What’s in a Name?  There is deep and important meaning, indeed.  Who knows, perhaps 3,300 years from now, your name will be read out with honor throughout Jewish world!

Shabbat shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow
