“Leading the Way”

Dear Friends,

It is easy to complain as our ancestors discovered out in the desert on the way to the Promised Land.  In this week’s Torah portion, the Children of Israel got ‘fed up’ with all the manna they have been eating on the way to the Promised Land.  Essentially, they got tired of the travelers’ food and wanted meat.  Even worse, they started to imagine how wonderful things were back in Egypt when they had all the fresh foods and fish they could eat.  Ah, they waxed nostalgic for the good ole’ days back in good ole’ Egypt… when they were slaves!

We do that, too.  When things get tough and we confront new and uncomfortable situations, we instinctively hearken back to the good ole’ days when things seemed so much easier. But, life never stays the same and we are constantly changing.  Thus, we must recognize that change is hard – precisely because it means letting go of the way things used to be and getting used to a new way.  Yet, change comes when we are ready to grow in experience and wisdom, when we are ready to take on new challenges, and when we are ready to move out of our comfort zone towards something better.

The lesson is clear.  Instead of complaining, blaming and regressing, our Jewish tradition is telling us to grow through change and to be the change.  We must stand up and find new and better solutions to the challenges at hand.  We must take responsibility and lead the way to a better and brighter future.

Shabbat shalom,
Rabbi Eitan Weiner-Kaplow
